To the Right or to the Left?

Have you ever wondered what makes people on the left (the “liberals” or “progressives”) do or think what they do and why those on the right (the “conservatives”) do or think the way they do?

Are you to the left or to the right, politically speaking? When did “left” and “right” start being used to describe political parties or political ideologies?

The predominate thinking of left and right divisions points to the French Revolution of 1789-1799. When the seating of the National Assembly took place those who were loyal to religion (i.e., Christianity) and the king were seated to the right of the president and those who supported the revolution sat on the left.  When the National Assembly was replaced with a Legislative Assembly in 1791, the “innovators” (revolutionaries) sat on the left, the “moderates” sat in the center and the “conscientious defenders of the constitution” sat on the right.

Burke vs. Paine. The political divisions of left and right became solidified in the ongoing political pamphlet war between Edmund Burke of Britain and Thomas Paine of America during the 1790s. Burke was a conservative while Paine was considered to be more liberal.  In 1790 Burke published Reflections on the Revolution in France.  Burke was known as a great reformer and many assumed that he would embrace the French Revolution as did intellectuals, radicals and orthodox Britains.  However, in Reflections Burke revealed his disdain for the Revolution, which he proclaimed would descend into anarchy, terror and war, which it did.

Burke’s position outraged Paine, who responded with his lengthy pamphlet of 31 articles, The Rights of Man, in 1791.  The pamphlet “war” became a literary battle between Burke, the consummate intellectual with a mastery of facts and a deep understanding of the limitations of man versus Paine, known for his hatred of authority in any form, rejecting conventional wisdom and tradition in exchange for re-establishing society and government based on abstract reasoning.  While Burke was typically admired by his contemporaries for his integrity and dignity, Paine garnered little admiration, even from his followers.  Burke was considered to be the consummate conservative on the “right”, while Paine was looked upon as the ordered radical on the “left”.

The reaction of the left vs. that of the right. Have you noticed that when people on the “left” get upset when things do not go their way they seem motivated to ridicule, demean and dehumanize their opposition? When they really get upset, they vehemently protest, riot, oppose authority, destroy other people’s property and businesses and even injure the innocent or those that serve to protect.  In the extreme, they seem to go ballistic; become irrational and are driven by unreasonable and idiotic demands.

People on the “right” on the other hand, when they are upset because things do not go as they hoped for or planned, typically do not demean the opposition, riot, destroy property or threaten the well being of others. They tend not to break the law, but, rather, respect the law to do what is right and constitutional.  Their typical form of protest is through the written or spoken word, or by voicing their disappointment or disapproval via the ballot box.  They take legal channels to work for change.  This may take longer, but their methods do not disrupt or threaten the stability or well being of individuals or society.

Well, I think I have discovered the reason for this great divergence of behavior between the left and the right political and societal factions. In the Bible the wise sage, King Solomon, mused long ago that, “A wise man’s heart is at his right hand, but a fool’s heart at his left” (Ecclesiastes 10:2, NKJV).  In the NIV translation of the Bible, the same verse reads thus: “The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.”  The Amplified version of the Bible states the verse this way:  “A wise man’s heart turns him toward the right [which is the way of blessing], but a fool’s heart turns him toward the left [which is the way of condemnation].”

Well, there you have it. The Bible says that those who are on the left are fools, deserving condemnation, while those on the right are wise, deserving of blessing.  Oh, I know some will say I am cherry-picking one verse in the Bible to make a point.  But, wait there is more.

Sheep vs. Goats. In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25, Jesus makes it clear what God’s Judgment will be like. Starting in verse 31, Jesus stated, “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.  All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.  And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left” (vss. 31-33).    Prior to this chapter, Jesus used the term “sheep” to refer to those He sought to follow Him or those who were following Him.  In other words, the sheep are those who would be obedient to His calling.

Jesus’ narrative continues: “Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:  for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me’” (vss. 34-36).  Jesus points out that it is those on the right that were obedient to God’s will and purpose even though they may not have known it.

“Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink?  When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?  Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’  And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me’” (vss. 37-40).

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

“Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (vss. 41-46).

Now you know why people on the “left” have lost their collective minds over the commanding political victories of Republicans on the “right”. The left, which has now become progressively aligned with communist, Marxist views and refuses to oppose radical Islam, no longer represents anything that resembles our Founder’s America.  The left has become unhinged, violent and literally insane in their approach to disappointment, defeat or objection to political policy.  Those on the “right” still have a strong desire to follow the U.S. Constitution so wisely laid down by America’s Founding Fathers; following legal procedures enshrined for our Republic almost two-and-a-half centuries ago.

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.  Proverbs 29:2

Addendum. The preceding scripture in Matthew, as my wife so observantly pointed out after my posting, would seem to support the left’s outrage and their compassion for the “stranger” or refugee.  But are the majority on the left really concerned about the plight of the refugee?  Granted there are some on the left who have genuine compassion for those in need, but they tend to express their concerns in rational, dignified ways.  However, it would seem that the vociferous majority on the left (Democrats, progressives, liberal college students, the liberal media, Hollywood types, etc.) have gone ballistic over President Trump’s “temporary” four month ban on immigrants from hostile Mid-Eastern countries.  Is their outrage motivated by their compassion for the “refugee” (whom they clearly identify as “Muslim”) or are they motivated by their vitriol hatred of President Trump?  I believe it is clearly the latter.

Case in point #1: In 2011, President Obama instituted a similar ban on Iraqi refugees for six months and no one on the left, including our now clearly leftist media, said a peep.  No protests, no outrage; nothing.  Why is it so unreasonable to those on the left for the President of the United States to implement a temporary ban on refugees from countries that are well known hot spots of Islamic terrorists trying to get to the United States to do us harm?  Is not the first duty of the President to defend and protect the safety and well-being of the citizens of America, or are we too conditioned to eight years of a former president who could have cared less about such constitutional responsibilities?

Remember, under Obama, not only did he grant immigration waivers to senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood (known for Islamic terrorism), but he made other MB members part of his administration, including in the Department of Homeland Security.

No, those who are truly leftists are not concerned about the plight of the refugee. They are only concerned about opposing and destroying the Trump presidency.  They will be satisfied with nothing less.

Case in point #2: This past weekend in Seattle an unidentified Black Lives Matter speaker who identified herself as a “preschool teacher” (God forbid) went on a hate-filled, vulgar tirade, screaming: We need to start killing people. First off, we need to start killing the White House. The White House must die. The White House, your f—ing White House, your f—ing presidents, they must go! F— the White House.  F— white supremacy, f— the U.S. empire, f— your imperialist ass lives. That s— gotta go.

Now, if that were a white person advocating such hate and incitement to do violence during the Obama Whitehouse, she would have been immediately arrested and charged with (at the very least) with a hate crime and, perhaps, with a terroristic threat. However, under the “whiteness” of the Trump administration, the leftist media and Seattle law enforcement did not even give it a nod, but rather a wink of approval.

Case in point #3: On January 29, Jonathan Turley, a well known constitutional law professor at George Washington University School of Law (and a self-professed political liberal) was invited to appear on CNN to explain the constitutionality of President Trump’s Executive Order on the temporary immigration ban.  Turley barely got to say a few words when CNN’s “Foreign Political Analyst” (no joke intended), Rula Jebreal, jumped down his throat, screaming at him that the “ban” was racist, white supremacy and “an instrument of tyranny.”  Apparently Ms. Jebreal had her eyes and ears closed throughout Obama’s tyrannical presidency.  The irrational, leftist Jebreal was so out of control that all Professor Turley could do was shake his head in disbelief at her tirade.  CNN host, Fareed Zakaria, of course, did nothing to try to bring her back to earth.

There are other examples far too numerous to bother with in this blog. Suffice it to say that the majority on the left have no interest or intention of meeting the needs of refugees, but, rather are only interested in causing chaos in order to bring down the Trump presidency.  I would bet the “farm” that if the ban were for “Christian” refugees you would not hear a peep from anyone on the left.

To the contrary, those on the “right” (largely represented by Christians) have two thousand years of generous, sacrificial history of reaching out to the oppressed, the poor, the stranger, the refugee.

And, a brief review and reminder: Where was the collective outrage from the left and the Obama administration when tens of thousands of Christians were (and are) being slaughtered, tortured, beheaded, thrown from buildings, etc. by Muslim terrorists?  Not a peep; not a tear; not a word of objection.

The 2016 Presidential Election (Kathleen’s Insight)

There is one candidate who is for the things below and one who is opposed.

  • One is pro-Israel, the other is not.
  • One is for freedom of speech, the other wants to control speech.
  • One wants lawful immigration, the other wants open borders.
  • One wants justice in our court system, the other wants activist judges that create law, rather than interpret the law.
  • One wants free enterprise, the other wants increased government regulation.
  • One wants the U.S. Constitution to be the law of the land, the other favors the U.N. Constitution.
  • The one is pro-life, the other wants to support increased abortion, including partial-birth abortion.
  • The one supports freedom of religion, the other seeks to suppress Christianity in America.
  • One has never been investigated for criminal activity, while the other is under constant investigation for such activity at the highest levels.
  • One understands economics and the advantages of capitalism and job creation, the other favors socialism, government control and has never created a job in the free market.
  • The one profits from Wall Street through wise investment, the other profits from Wall Street by giving worthless speeches.
  • One stands firm against corruption in government, the other has been a part of that corruption for decades.
  • One seeks advice from Christian leaders, the other relies on radical socialists.
  • The one wants to rebuild our decimated military, the other wants to continue its demise.
  • The one wants parental control of education, the other wants government control.
  • The one wants to protect America’s sovereignty, the other wants a One World globalist America.
  • One supports racial equality, the other foments racial divisiveness.
  • One respects and supports the sacrifice of America’s veterans, the other despises America’s military personnel.
  • One has demonstrated financial responsibility in matters of finance, the other had $6 billion of taxpayer monies disappear and unaccounted for during time in government office.
  • One believes in parents and families raising children, the other believes government should.
  • One is surrounding himself with patriotic leaders, the other with far left socialists.
  • One expresses the love of country and countrymen, the other speaks of despising fellow Americans.
  • One is for equal opportunity and the “American Dream”, the other for the re-distribution of wealth.
  • One opposes gay rights and gay marriage, the other believes they are constitutional guarantees like freedom of speech and freedom of religion.
  • One stands for law and order, the other for selective justice.

God did not choose to give us a Christian candidate. Perhaps that was the fault of the divided Christian community.  Instead, He gave us a person who is a “work in progress” like all of us.  One who believes in justice and who has strong convictions not unlike most Christians but expresses those convictions in ways that are often unacceptable to most of us.  However, they are sincerely held beliefs.  The other candidate provides evidence every day of being a pathological liar who has repeatedly deceived the American people.

A City on a Hill. If the Church and we as Christians are called to be “the salt of the earth” . . . “the light of the world” . . . and to be “A city set on a hill” that should not be hidden (Jesus in Matthew 5:13-14), why is it so hard for many Christians to believe that God planted His church and His people in America for the sake of the nation?

From the very founding of our country God has given His church (and His people) the responsibility for the spiritual well being of the nation. He gave America a constitution based on Judeo-Christian values—not Islamic, not Hindu, not atheistic or any other).  It has proved to be the best form of self-government the world has ever known.  Ironically, but by political design, our educational system now teaches the value of the U.N. constitution and globalism and Islamic thought.  These are two very different anti-freedom, anti-Christian and oppressive systems.  Partly as a result of these re-education systems (and to a lesser degree, biblical interpretations), many Christians believe that they should not be involved in politics or hold political office.  God foresaw this outcome of anti-God globalism with His revelation to the Apostle John on the Isle of Patmos nearly 2000 years ago.

As Christians living in America we are part of the most unique “experiment” in the history of the world—a self-governing people whose laws and way of life were founded on biblical principles. The Church was planted here in America for the sake of the country and the mandate of Christians to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ worldwide.

As citizens of God’s Kingdom on earth we have a responsibility to demonstrate God’s love and righteousness in our midst; to be accountable for our actions or lack thereof in standing up for righteousness and mercy. I believe this is America’s last call for redemption.  The advantage that Satan has is that the Church has always been divided by pettiness, pride, rivalry and biblical incidentals.  We have untold denominations and sects, each believing they have the “truth”.  Here is the “truth”—“a kingdom” (country) or “house divided cannot stand” (Matthew 12:25).  America is divided mainly because the Church is divided.

For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins  with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?  (1 Peter 4:17).

Founding Father, John Adams, in his Thoughts on Government (1776), wrote: Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness of the people; and not for profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore, the people alone have an incontestable, unalienable, and indefeasible right to institute government; and to reform, alter, or totally change the same, when their protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness require it. It is the responsibility of the populace, the American people, including Christians, to hold their elected officials accountable for their actions and decisions and to make sure they are upholding the law of the land and not implementing their own for their own benefit or agenda. An election is the one best opportunity, bar a revolution, to bring about a change of government when one is needed.

John Adams, in a speech before the Militia of Massachusetts declared, Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other (October 11, 1798). Perhaps that is America’s biggest problem, we have fallen away from God and as a whole are no longer a people of faith.  We have allowed our Constitution to be trashed by globalists and irreligious elitists with self-serving interests and not that of the people.  God will hold Christians accountable for the outcome of America’s unique world contribution to self-government.

 

The 2016 Presidential Election

A Christian’s Perspective

As Christians and Americans we have a challenging decision to make this election. Never in the history of our country have we had two least desirable candidates for the highest office in the land and perhaps the most powerful leadership position in the world.  For most, the decision boils down to Clinton or Trump, or “none of the above.”  It has been a presidential campaign marked by continuous accusations, threats, intimidations and lapses in moral character—all of which should be reprehensible for the Christian believer.

The truth is, America has never had a righteous, sinless person run or get elected to public office.  Not even George Washington, who was unquestionably the best and most humble person to hold the office of president of the United States.

However, I have come to realize, that despite the undesirable nature of each major candidate, for the Christian or patriotic American, this election is not about, “do I vote for Clinton or Trump?”, but what kind of presidential administration, judicial system, military, law, immigration policy, respect of life, civil rights, respect of the Bill of Rights and U.S. Constitution, etc. do I want and expect from the nation’s leadership?  Which candidate is most likely to surround himself or herself with law abiding cabinet members that will implement the will of the people?  Which one will seek to establish a judicial system that not only follows the Constitution, but interprets the law and does not make new law without the consent of the people or Congress?  Which one will rebuild the U.S. military that has been decimated over the last 8 years to levels not seen since WWII?  Which one will seek to re-establish racial harmony and oneness instead fomenting divisiveness?  Which one has pledged to respect the lives of the unborn?  Which one will uphold justice for all?  Which one has pledged to follow the Bill of Rights which guarantees the freedom of speech, religion, the press, right to peacefully assemble and bear arms?  Which one has agreed to protect our country’s borders and implement a sane immigration policy? Which one is likely to follow the law when signing into law congressional laws or mandates?

The presidency is much more than just the presidential candidate, it is the course of America and what we desire our country to look like.  Now, let me make myself clear: As a Christian, I am a Christ follower first, then an American in terms of birth and placement.  I have said for years that America has slid past the point where human intervention will save her.  Only God can and will redeem her, but only if the Church and its people repent for allowing things to get this bad through ignoring sin and refusing to stand up for righteousness.

The New Year: Wake Me When It’s Over

Get your favorite non-alcoholic drink and relax in your comfy chair.  This is a long one (six years in the making).

(Disclaimer:  I don’t blog that often because, quite frankly, I’m tired of all the bad news and I hate to be the bearer of even more.  But sometimes I just can’t stand it anymore, watching my beloved country being flushed down the toilet and not enough Americans seem to care to do anything about it.  Especially our elected officials who seem to march lock-step blindly on; seeing nothing wrong and hoping that time will heal all wounds.  But I am a “watchman” and I am called to keep the warning before the people as long as there are still people who care to be warned and heed those warnings.)

I’m tired.  I’m tired of all the meaningless rhetoric from politicians (especially Republicans—I expect it from the liberal, leftist Democrats), the liberal “yellow” journalism press and the heretical clergy.  The Republican establishment yammer on-and-on about how bad President Obama is and how scandalous he and his administration are; how corrupt; how inept; how this, how that, but then do absolutely, absolutely nothing to combat it or come against it.  Not even to have the courage to stand up against Obama and his ilk, but to actively participate and support his Marxist agenda.

Let’s review the Obama accomplishments so far.  God help us for what the next two years will bring.

The Economy.  If you think the economy is really good, then you have been brainwashed by the liberal media and Obama’s lying government.  With all the lies and deception that Obama, his staff and agencies have been caught with, do you really think the economy is as good as they are trying to make you believe?  I know, the stock market is rising to record highs; unemployment has supposedly sunk to 5.6 percent and so on.  But have you stopped to consider that the vast majority of jobs that have been “created” are either part-time or lower paying service sector jobs?  There are really very few high paying jobs in manufacturing, trades or the professional ranks.  Real household income is at the lowest it’s been in decades.  The workforce participation rate (62.8%) is the lowest since 1978 and has steadily dropped since the year 2000.  That means a lot of people have just given up on looking for meaningful work.

And unemployment?  Well, according to highly respected economist Walter “John” Williams of the popular ShadowStats web site, if you factor in all those who have given up looking and all those who want full time work but can only find part-time at McDonalds or Wal Mart, the “real” unemployment/under-employment rate jumped from around 12.5% before Obama took office to over 20% after he took office and has held steady at around 22-23% range for the past six years.  As far as Obama being the “savior” of the black community, unemployment among his “brethren” remains stubbornly double that of whites.  Among black teens, 16-19 years old, it has been near or above 30% and still is above 28%.

If the economy is doing so well then how is it that major retailers like Sears, Kmart, Macy’s, Radio Shack and many others are planning on closing thousands of stores (Radio Shack, 1,100 alone) and laying off tens of thousands of employees in 2015?  If the economy is so good, why are there still over 46 million Americans receiving food stamps?  About 20 million more than when Obama first took office.

To understand Obama’s view of what makes the economy work, one should listen to or read his speech at Osawatomie High School (Kansas) on December 6, 2011.  In his attempt to explain “trickle down” economics that is promoted by capitalists, he stated: “If only we cut more regulations and cut more taxes—especially for the wealthy—our economy will grow stronger. . . . if the winners do really well, jobs and prosperity will eventually trickle down to everyone else.

“. . . Here’s the problem:” he asserted, “It doesn’t work.  It’s never worked.”  Obama’s way to economic prosperity for all is to tax more and regulate more.  Just during his first term, the Obama administration issued new regulations that will cost the American taxpayer $70 billion.  The number of regulations during Obama’s first term were almost triple those of his predecessor, President Bush, during his first term.  Just in his fourth year of office alone, federal regulators issued 2605 new rules.  In his first five years in office Obama has added 17,522 pages to the Code of Federal Regulations.  The CFR had 175,496 pages at the end of 2013.  In 2014, Obama added an estimated 75,000 pages of new regulations or an estimated $181 billion in new financial burdens upon Americans.

And there you have Obama’s simple Marxist view of America and capitalism.  “It doesn’t work.  It’s never worked.”  Despite 300-plus years of American ingenuity, industrialization and “trickle down” prosperity that (up until now) has built the greatest country and economy the world has ever known.  But, according the great “seer”, it just doesn’t work.

America’s Financial Condition.  When President Obama took office on January 20, 2009, America’s National debt was $10.626 trillion and the debt held by the public was $6.307 trillion.  America had endured 8 years of George Bush’s presidency in which he added $4.9 trillion to the National Debt.  Presidential candidate Obama called Bush’s penchant for such debt accumulation “unpatriotic”.  Now enter Obama’s world.  The National Debt after 6 years of Barack Obama now stands at $18.08 trillion and will likely exceed $20 trillion before Obama’s last year in office ends.  Public debt under Obama has risen to $12.995 trillion as of December 31, 2014 or over 100%.  That means that under Obama more public debt has been accumulated than under the administrations of all 43 presidents that preceded him, as will the National Debt before his second term is over.  What is even worse is that Congress appears to be unwilling or uninterested in stemming the tide of red ink and the weight of the economic burden it is placing upon the shoulders of every American, present and future.  It is unconscionable, but then, no one ever accused a politician of having a conscience.  Oh, and the interest on this debt?  Only a mere $522 billion per year and rising.  Gee, what could the American economy look like with an extra half trillion circulating each year?

To put this in a worldwide perspective, it is estimated that the global indebtedness of all nations at the end of 2014 was $60.906 trillion.  Of this debt, the people of the United States held 29.6% of it, but only represent 4.4% of the world population.  With the Obama administration’s bent on uncontrolled immigration, America’s financial condition will worsen as unskilled, uneducated, lower wage earners flood the country and governmental system, creating greater indebtedness for hardworking Americans while contributing little to the country’s tax base.  Hardworking U.S. citizens will see their tax burdens rise and real incomes continue to shrink.

Inflation.  The “official” government position is, and has been for some time, that inflation or the CPI (Consumer Price Index) is somewhere between 0 and 2% or lastly (November) at 1.3%.  Do you believe that?  If you do, you are not paying attention to what you are buying or have a short memory of the recent past.  When we departed the U.S. of A. in August of 2011, I remember that in the Midwest we could buy top sirloin steak for $3.98-4.98/lb.  Milk was about $3.50/gallon; eggs about $1.20/doz.; bread about $2; sliced roast beef was around $5.99/lb.; sliced Virginia ham about $4.99.  Upon our visit to the U.S. in June this past year we found that top sirloin had risen to $9.98; milk was about $5.00/gallon; eggs $2.50; bread $3.50-4.00; sliced roast beef and Virginia ham was $8.99 and $6.99 respectively.  This food inflation was far higher than the 0-2% the government data presents.

What has masked true inflation is the plummeting energy sector—no thanks to Obama.  Oil prices are declining due to world economies being in the tank and the surge of oil production on private U.S. land, something Obama has no control over but is trying to clamp down on through more and more environmental regulations.

Education & Knowledge.  Not long ago I watched a couple of informal history surveys on two different university campuses.  The two different interviewers asked simple, basic questions that any 5th grader should be able to answer.  Such questions as: “Who won the Civil War?”  “From whom did America win its independence?”  “Who is America’s Vice President?”  In each case, an overwhelming number of students did not have a clue as to the right answer.  This is just one indication of the radical left’s success in “dumbing down” of America’s youth.   Enter Common Core, another peg in the dumbing down strategy that even teachers across the country are rebelling against and some states are passing legislation to outlaw it.

Not content with trying to control the educational input of our children, the Obamas, via Michelle, decided they knew best what kids in school should eat.  As a result, thousands of uneaten lunches across America are thrown out each day by kids who refuse to eat the garbage called “food”.   Real history that teaches students true, politically incorrect history has been banned from schools at all levels, as has true science and math.

Teenagers cannot even make simple mathematical decisions without a calculator, cash register or computer.  I once asked a teenager at a convenience store for five singles in exchange for a five dollar bill.  She looked at me like I was speaking a foreign tongue.  I finally said, “May I have five one dollar bills, please?” In part, because of this dumbing down, that is why I decided to write two volumes of early American history and recently revised and expanded the second volume, We the People, Birth of a Nation which presents American history from the mouths of the Founders, complete with the full historical documents that they labored over.

Now, educational boards across the U.S. are condoning proselytizing on behalf of Islam using history texts written and edited by Muslims in order to portray Islam in a favorable light.  In many schools, children of unsuspecting parents are being groomed in the five pillars of Islam, must dress in Muslim attire so they can become more culturally sensitive and be forced to visit mosques, all in the name of cultural diversity.

Foreign Relations.  America’s image abroad is probably at the lowest level since the country’s founding.  Obama’s foreign policy is a disaster and his Secretaries of State (Clinton & Kerry) were and are inept and pathetic.  Obama’s apologetic and appeasement tours and position are an embarrassment and a kick in the face to the Founding Fathers and all those patriots who valiantly fought and died for the freedom, strength and leadership that America has provided to the world.  It’s no secret that Obama despises American “Exceptionalism” and has done everything within his power to diminish America’s once powerful image around the world.

At the same time Obama is destroying American exceptionalism he works hard at legitimizing the tyrants of Cuba, Iran and other tyrant-led countries.  While he is busy patronizing the tyrants of the world he has virtually ignored the relationships and alliances with countries in the Western hemisphere.

According to the 2015 Open Doors report on world terrorism, 2014 was the worst year for persecution of Christians.  However, the “leader of the free world”, Mr. Obama, has said virtually nothing and done virtually nothing to confront it or the Islamic terrorists that are behind the overwhelming majority of it.

High Level Corruption.  Just about every presidential administration has a scandal or two during their presidency, but usually such lapses in judgment do not affect American lives and freedom.  Enter, once again, President Obama.  Scandals and corruption associated with him and his Whitehouse team are non-ending and just about everyone of them have severely impacted the lives and freedoms of the majority of Americans.

  • Fast & Furious gun-running which put American lives at risk, especially along the Mexican border states by putting high-powered weapons into the hands of known drug lords and, at least in two known instances, resulted in the murder of U.S. border patrol agents.
  • The Benghazi assault on our unprotected outpost that allowed Ambassador Stevens and three others to be murdered because Obama & Hillary Clinton just did not see the need for adequate protection. Then when it is attacked and overwhelmed by obvious (to everyone else) Islamic jihadists, tried to blame the attack on an obscure internet video that practically no one ever saw or heard of; then lied repeatedly to Americans and the world about their despicable behavior and disregard for the safety of Americans serving abroad.   • The IRS targeting scandal where Obama and his hirelings authorized the use of the IRS to target conservative groups and prevent them from raising monies for the 2012 presidential campaign. Shameful; despicable; scandalous; criminal. But no one’s in jail. Not even one indictment.
  • The NSA spying outrage where millions of private conversations and data bases were violated for nefarious purposes, all in the name of “national security” but really to keep tabs on Obama’s opponents.
  • The Veteran’s Administration debacle of disgusting and inhuman treatment of thousands of U.S. veterans. Admittedly, not all on Obama’s watch, but seemed to intensify under his administration.
  • Voter Fraud. How else would you explain 110% of voters in some precincts voting for Obama or 100% of all precincts in Philadelphia voting for Obama, or electronic voting machines around the country “mysteriously” switching Republican votes to Democratic ones?

Well, you get the picture.  There are more Obama scandals then I care to take time to write about—particularly those that involve violations of the U.S. Constitution.  That alone would take a book of several hundred pages.  The list of Obama’s abuses of his office and public trust seems to be just about endless.  The sad thing is that most Americans are clueless and they will not understand the impact of this president on American freedoms, prosperity and national security until many years later.

National Security.  Under Obama’s “leadership” America’s military has become smaller than before World War II and considerably weaker.  According to U.S. Army Chief of Staff, Gen. Ray Odierno, the U.S. Army only has two brigades (6,000-10,000 troops) that are combat ready.  Under Obama as Commander-in-Chief, military morale has plummeted, while military deaths due to suicide has steadily increased since he took office to the point where, starting in 2012, military deaths from suicide exceeded those from combat.  In 2012 alone 524 U.S. servicemen and women committed suicide, and at a rate far more than those among the much larger civilian population.  In addition, Obama has purged the military of over 200 top leaders and given “pink slips” to over 500 career military leaders.  Of the $1 trillion in sequester cuts at the end of 2013 by Obama and Congress, over half was absorbed by the military at a time when America needs military strength at its peak.  Medal of Honor decorated, Maj. Gen. Patrick Brady, stated, “There is no doubt he [Obama] is intent on emasculating the military and will fire anyone who disagrees with him” (see Revelation 18 and the fate of America, page 288).

Although Obama trumpets that America has never been safer, the truth is, America has never been more vulnerable.  His catastrophic decision to prematurely pull out of Iraq against all military advice has created the meteoric rise of the Islamic terrorist group, ISIS—a group that Obama cannot seem to bring himself to effectively encounter and annihilate despite their horrific acts of butchery in the name of their god.

On January 22, 2009, two days after being sworn in to “faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States”, President Obama issued an executive order to close the Gitmo terrorist detention camp in Cuba within a year.  Although he did not succeed, he has released almost 100 Islamic terrorists so they can pursue their terrorist efforts against the United States. Many of those released are now leading or fighting with terrorist groups in the Middle East and elsewhere.  In 2014 alone, Obama released 28 suspected Islamic terrorists.  Follow-up on GITMO detainees released shows that at least 30% re-enter the battlefield to carry out more terror attacks.

President Barack Obama having not succeeded in keeping his promise to close Gitmo within a year of becoming president is now resorting to a different tactic. He is releasing Gitmo inmates, and not just any Gitmo terrorist, but top Taliban intelligence official who kept Stinger missiles and uranium at his farm. But it even gets worse than this. The Afghans gave “security guarantees” that there is no requirement this uranium terrorist and 3 others to be held in prison and they are said to be likely sent home to their families.

The uranium terrorist is Mohammed Zahir, who was also to top it all off, a leading Taliban weapons supplier, according to his official Guantanamo file, leaked three years ago to The Telegraph by the Wikileaks hacker group (Source: Shoebat Foundation, December 20, 2014).

On September 23, 2014, speaking before the United Nations, President Obama (with a straight face) announced that the world was a lot safer now since he took office.  “As a result of this [international security] work and cooperation with allies and partners, the world is more stable than it was five years ago.”  Really?  Does this man live on this planet?  Threats from terrorists—principally Islamic terrorists—has NEVER been greater.  Just ask any one of the hundreds of millions of Jews and Christians around the world who are in daily fear of persecution, torture and murder.  Just ask the thousands of U.S. military parents, spouses and relatives of the thousands of men and women who have died under the Obama administration trying to fight a restricted and unwinnable (because Obama doesn’t want to win the) war against Muslim terrorists or the survivors of those thousands of brave military personnel who could not take it any longer under this “Commander-in-Chief” and committed suicide from Post Traumatic Stress or lack of committed leadership to a winning strategy.

Since September 11, 2001, Muslim terrorists have committed 24,826 non-military deadly attacks around the world (Source: http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/pages/thelist.htm).  In 2011 alone, Muslim terrorists killed an estimated 12,533 people (Source: National Counterterrorism Center).  Since Obama took office in 2009 there have been at least 20 deadly Muslim terrorist attacks in America.  However, President Obama insists that such daily terror is just the “senseless violence of a few.”  Just in the last three months of 2014, Islamic terrorists carried out almost 900 attacks, killing almost 8,000 people and wounding thousands more.  But the world is safer now that Obama is at the helm.

On January 12, 2015, the U.S. military’s Central Command Twitter account was hacked by either ISIS members or sympathizers who sent terror messages to the U.S. military.  But we’re secure.  No threat here.

President Obama and members of his administration have repeatedly disclosed national secrets of the U.S. and its allies.   Perhaps the most infamous was the disclosure of members of Seal Team 6 who were responsible for annihilating Osama Bin Laden on May 1, 2011.  The very next day, Vice President Joe Biden, in an act of treason, “outed” the Team to the world.  Three months late, on August 6, 30 members of Seal Team 6, on another mission in Afghanistan, had their helicopter shot down.  All were killed, as were eight Afghanis on board.

The Obama administration seems to spend more time and effort placating and empowering the tyrannical terrorists of the world like Iran, Russia, China, Cuba and Islamic terrorists worldwide than they do confronting them and minimizing their threat to America and the world.

While Obama touts his delusional safe world he decimates America’s borders and our border patrol, making them ineffective.  Not long ago an American trucker driving a truck across the border from Mexico to America videoed his border crossing experience.  As he pulled up to the American border guard, the guard asked the driver if he was the only one on board.  The trucker said, “Why, does it matter?”  The border guard said, “Not anymore” and waved the driver through without any further questions and no inspection.  In many places along the southern U.S. border, border agents have been disarmed or made to pull back to 70 miles from the border.  When they were able to provide some semblance of border security, for the first time (in 2014) they apprehended more non-Mexicans than Mexicans.  And, it has been well documented by border agents and county sheriffs along the border that Muslims are crossing the border without much impediment.

Update, January 24, 2015.  As Obama “fiddles” the Mideast burns.  Today, Libya is in turmoil; Egypt still unstable; Yemen has fallen into chaos; Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon are being overtaken by Al Qaeda & ISIS; Iran has been emboldened in its nuclear program; America’s support of Israel has been weakened while Hamas has been strengthened by Obama and America’s ally, the King of Saudi Arabia has died leaving an uncertain future in U.S.-Saudi relations.  Under Obama the Middle East has declined into chaos and Islamic terrorism.  But, the deceiver-in chief of America says the world has never been safer, so it must be true.

The Enemy Within.  As if this brazen weakening of American security were not enough, Obama has stacked his administration with known members of the radical Muslim Brotherhood, including serving in the Department of Homeland Security. In the past year it has been widely reported (by responsible media) that there are simulated cell phone “towers” popping up all over America.  These cell phone data interceptors are collecting the cell phone calls and data of millions of Americans.  Who is doing it?  The FBI, CIA, Pentagon?  No, none of the reasonably suspected culprits.  It’s the Obama “Justice” Department.  Why?  Supposedly to catch that one in a billion call by a terrorist using certain catch words or phrases.  In the meantime the collective freedom of speech of millions of law-abiding U.S. citizens is being severely compromised. Under Obama the Feds have become the enemy of the people.

Race Relations.  President Obama said race relations since he took office in 2009 have gotten better.  In a Fox News poll of December 7-9, 62% said it has gotten worse under Obama, only 19% said it has become better.  Obama’s alliances and support of black agitators like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson heighten the black-white divide.  The man in the Whitehouse has clearly shown his prejudicial side, as has his Justice Department cohort, Eric Holder.  While they both are ready to jump into a suspected white-on-black assault, they are no-shows on any one of the thousands of documented black-on-white assaults and murders, particularly committed by black thugs “playing” the “knock-out” game of punching out the lights of unsuspecting men, women, the disabled and elderly.  The Obama DOJ believes and practices selective prosecution. When members of the Black Panthers intimated white voters in Philadelphia during the 2008 election, Holder refused to investigate or bring charges.  When thousands of blacks rioted and torched Ferguson, Missouri after a grand jury decided that Michael Brown was killed in self-defense by a white police officer, rather than support that decision, Holder implied that justice was denied and is now threatening a Civil Rights suit against the officer and gave credence and justification for the rioting.  When the New Black Panthers recently threatened to target police officers for assassination, not a peep was heard from Holder or Obama.

Poverty.  The poverty rate in the U.S. is 15.7%, two percentage points higher than when Obama took office.  Some parts of the country, like Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina and Tennessee have once thriving cities with poverty rates between 27-35%.  This is certainly not the sign of a full economic recovery that Obama boasts about.  The truth is that 45 million Americans still live in poverty and the percentage of Americans in that situation is three percentage points higher than before Obama took office.

Health Care.  If you do not know by now that the (Un)Affordable Care Act or Obamacare is a disaster and will destroy American health care, then, once again, you have not been paying attention.  The law that Nancy Pelosi said they just had to pass to find out what was in it, is neither affordable (except for the poor) nor very caring.  People are losing their doctors, their health care providers, their affordable premiums (as AFC premiums skyrocket), and one poll disclosed that 70% of doctors plan to leave their profession in the next few years.  Add to this mess the millions of illegal immigrants that will be added to the health care system who will get free health care, thanks to the U.S. taxpayer, and you can imagine what health care in the U.S. will be like in a short couple of years.

Religious Freedom.  Although Obama and team sees no need to temper the hateful rhetoric coming out of America’s mosques, they seem to seize every opportunity or support local and regional court assaults on the freedoms of Christians and Jews to freely practice their religions or operate godly businesses.  You can read more about this assault on Christianity in Revelation 18 and the fate of America.

Adherence to the Law.  Obama and his team have violated the U.S. Constitution so frequently that it is like we do not have a constitution anymore.  There is no longer the separation of powers so wisely established by the Founding Fathers.  Obama is Tyrant and King:  he makes the laws; decides which laws should be enforced and which he can ignore; he can wave his magic pen and decree whatever he wants to be so, no matter how many lawmakers or members of the public object.  Of course, he is not entirely to blame.  Members of Congress have sat on the collective bums through it all, saying and doing nothing for fear that they might face some kind of recrimination for coming against or even impeaching the “first” pseudo-black president.

Final Word (Sort of).  Now, after all that has been said you might think I am prejudice or anti-somebody, but I’m not.  I just believe in calling a spade a spade (no pun or racial slur intended).  Even Jesus called out the Pharisees when he saw how they treated the people and misled them.  I said in 2008 that America would regret the day that they elected Barack Hussein Obama.  Unfortunately, to date, I do not think I have been proven wrong.

Wake Me When It’s Over.  So, where is the public and Congressional outrage?  Where are the religious leaders falling to their knees and begging God for mercy and leading their congregations in repentance and turning to God in true worship and righteousness?  If we think some courageous person or persons are going to step forward with a magic solution that will rectify this mess, we are deceiving ourselves.  America is far beyond effective human intervention.  Only God Almighty is up to the job, but He will not intervene unless His people repent and fully return to Him; turn from their wicked ways and stand upon His righteousness.  So, wake me when the church decides it has had enough and is willing to take a stand and stops laying down to be trampled upon by anyone who chooses to do so.

The Prophetic Wisdom & Warnings of George Washington

George Washington, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army—the forerunner of the U.S. military—and the first President of the United States of America, was a humble man of prayer and devout patriot. He was also a man of exceptional wisdom, discernment and vision.   Toward the end of his second term, Washington had Hamilton review the Madison draft of his farewell speech that he had intended to use at the end of his first term and make revisions. While Madison and Hamilton constructed the draft, it was Washington who carefully considered every word, every addition and deletion, before giving his approval.

Interestingly, it was never given orally by Washington but on September 19, 1796, it was published in the American Daily Advertizer in Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter The Independent Chronicle, the published voice of the New England Republicans, printed the address.

With much reluctance, Washington turned down the offer for a third term. Washington had longed for the privacy of his beloved Mount Vernon since the end of the war. Two weeks before he took the oath of office on April 30, 1789, he told his fellow citizens of Alexandria, Virginia, that “my love of retirement is so great, that no earthly consideration, short of conviction of duty, could have prevailed upon me to depart from my resolution ‘never more to take any share in transactions of a public nature.’” Even when his second presidential term ended in March, 1797, his retirement and return to Mount Vernon would be brief. In 1798, as war with France seemed to be on the near horizon, Washington accepted President John Adams’ urging to lead the American military once again. His call was short-lived as tensions eased and he was able to return to his Virginia estate.

Although, unlike many of his compatriot leaders, Washington lacked a formal and collegiate education, it did not hamper his keen insight and wisdom that shone forth in his voluminous correspondence. Notwithstanding Madison’s and Hamilton’s contributions, the address is clearly Washington in style and content. In the lengthy salute to America, he presents several personal convictions and concerns for the future of his beloved country.

Importance of unity and the dangers of factions and divisions. He was greatly concerned about the growing trend of individual wants at the expense of national unity. Personal freedom, Washington believed, could only continue to exist and prosper with the desire of all Americans to be united in the ongoing, uniquely American brand of freedom, for the benefit of the whole nation. Strong, misguided, individualism or regionalism—that erupted into the Civil War—could destroy the young nation.

Washington firmly believed that for the Union of states to survive, unity, not only among the nation’s leaders, but its people as well would be essential. . . . as a strong incitement to unceasing vows that heaven may continue to you the choicest tokens of its beneficence; he wrote, that your union and brotherly affection may be perpetual; that the free Constitution, which is the work of your hands, may be sacredly maintained; that its administration in every department may be stamped with wisdom and virtue; [and] that the happiness of the people of these States, under the auspices of liberty, may be made complete by so careful a preservation and so prudent a use of this blessing as will acquire to them the glory of recommending it . . . and adoption of every nation which is yet a stranger to it.

A man seasoned by a long military career and an extreme love of his country, Washington cherished the hard-won freedom and independence that was to be handed down to generations of Americans to come after him. But he was concerned about the real threat of factions and divisions in both politics and the people.

The unity of government which constitutes you one people is also now dear to you. It is justly so, for it is a main pillar in the edifice of your real independence, the support of your tranquility at home, your peace abroad; of your safety; of your prosperity; of that very liberty which you so highly prize. But as it is easy to foresee that, from different causes and from different quarters, much pains will be taken, many artifices employed to weaken in your minds the conviction of  this truth; as  this  is  the  point  in your political fortress against which the batteries of internal and external enemies will be most constantly and actively (though often covertly and insidiously) directed, it is of infinite moment that you should properly estimate the immense value of your national union to your collective and individual happiness; that you should cherish a cordial, habitual, and immovable attachment to it; accustoming yourselves to think and speak of it as of the palladium [rarity] of your political safety and prosperity; watching for its preservation with jealous anxiety; discountenancing whatever may suggest even a suspicion that it can in any event be abandoned; and indignantly frowning upon the first dawning of every attempt to alienate any portion of our country from the rest, or to enfeeble the sacred ties which now link together the various parts.

Washington foresaw, that while the newly conceived U.S. Constitution had sufficient safeguards, that there would arise in the future those from both within the country and from outside the country that would seek to weaken the nation by a “divide and conquer” strategy if the populace was not watchful and committed to liberty, justice and prosperity for all, divesting themselves of self-interests. Whether Citizens, by birth or choice, of a common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections, he advocated. The name of American, which belongs to you in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of patriotism more than any appellation derived from local discriminations. With slight shades of difference, you have the same religion, manners, habits, and political principles.

Perhaps Washington did not foresee the degree of “multi-culturalism” America would embrace 200 years later, but he did fully understand that unless all residents of the nation, whether native-born or foreign-born, fully accepted the “land of the free” as their cherished home—culture, language, laws and morality—the nation would soon be torn asunder. This unity among people of different backgrounds and beliefs was essential, not only to the country’s safety and prosperity, but to its strength and protection against all enemies foreign and domestic. . . . While, then, every part of our country thus feels an immediate and particular interest in union, all the parts combined cannot fail to find in the united mass of means and efforts greater strength, greater resource, proportionably greater security from external danger, a less frequent interruption of their peace by foreign nations; and, what is of inestimable value, they must derive from union an exemption from those broils and wars between themselves . . . . they will avoid the necessity of those overgrown military establishments which, under any form of government, are inauspicious to liberty, and which are to be regarded as particularly hostile to republican liberty. In this sense it is that your union ought to be considered as a main prop of your liberty, and that the love of the one ought to endear to you the preservation of the other.

Washington believed that Union should be the primary object of patriotic desire. Sadly, America today has never been so fractious and divided since the Civil war.  America has degenerated from a society of committed and unified freedom fighters and lovers to a “what’s in for me” society that appears willing to sacrifice true freedom at all costs as long as they can get something out of it.  As the venerable Benjamin Franklin once stated, He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security.

. . . there will always be reason, Washington wrote, to distrust the patriotism of those who in any quarter may endeavor to weaken its bands.

Dangers of the party system. Washington detested the fractious and partisan two party political system that he saw developing under his administration. He saw it as destructive and unhealthy for the country. The party system of government, he foresaw, had the potential to go beyond the normal political checks and balances and rip the power of self-government out of the hands of the citizens.

To the efficacy and permanency of your Union, he penned, a government for the whole is indispensable. No alliance, however strict, between the parts can be an adequate substitute; they must inevitably experience the infractions and interruptions which all alliances in all times have experienced. . . . This government, the offspring of our own choice, uninfluenced and unawed, adopted upon full investigation and mature deliberation, completely free in its principles, in the distribution of its powers, uniting security with energy, and containing within itself a provision for its own amendment, has a just claim to your confidence and your support. . . . The basis of our political systems is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government. But the Constitution . . . till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole people, is sacredly obligatory upon all.

Washington undoubtedly would be horrified how the Constitution has been ripped apart by special interest groups and self-serving politicians over the years since his demise. It is no longer a Constitution of just laws for all, but only for those who no longer have the power and will to confront injustice and the powerful.  The two-party system he believed had the potential to tear the country apart.

All obstructions to the execution of the laws, all combinations and associations, under whatever plausible character, with the real design to direct, control, counteract, or awe the regular deliberation and action of the constituted authorities, are destructive of this fundamental principle, and of fatal tendency. They serve to organize faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force; to put, in the place of the delegated will of the nation the will of a party, often a small but artful and enterprising minority of the community; and, according to the alternate triumphs of different parties, to make the public administration the mirror of the ill-concerted and incongruous projects of faction, rather than the organ of consistent and wholesome plans digested by common counsels and modified by mutual interests.

“Money talks” as they say and Washington understood that the propensity of human nature to lobby and seek favor with politicians had the destructive potential to subvert the Constitution and destroy the liberty and union he and so many other patriots fought and died for. Today, the majority of Congress no longer truly represents the will or desires of the people, but only of those who can grease the palms of special interests or finance re-election campaigns.  It seems that the typical politician is not in office to stand up for and serve the people, but is there to secure the permanency of his or her future. Party factions, Washington wrote, in the course of time and things, . . . become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.

One method of assault on the Constitution he believed would be alterations which will impair the energy of the system, and thus to undermine what cannot be directly overthrown. It seems that with each succeeding generation of leaders in high places each one flirts with stretching the efficacy of the Constitution.  The current administration in the Whitehouse is no exception and, perhaps, has clearly and willfully violated the Constitution with every available opportunity.  With each constitutional violation, the nation and its people lose another chick of freedom and independence, and like the proverbial frog in a kettle of gradually heated water, does not perceive the danger until it is too late.

This [divisive party] spirit, Washington continued in his warning speech, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind. . . . it is seen in its greatest rankness, and is truly their worst enemy.

The alternate domination of one faction over another, Washington continued, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, . . . has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty. Has America not arrived at this point today?  According to Washington, it is up to the people—a wise and educated people—to rise up and discourage and restrain such abuse of servanthood.

[The party system] serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.

There is an opinion that parties in free countries are useful checks upon the administration of the government and serve to keep alive the spirit of liberty, Washington noted. This within certain limits is probably true; and in governments of a monarchical cast, patriotism may look with indulgence, if not with favor, upon the spirit of party. But in those of the popular character, in governments purely elective, it is a spirit not to be encouraged. From their natural tendency, it is certain there will always be enough of that spirit for every salutary purpose. And there being constant danger of excess, the effort ought to be by force of public opinion, to mitigate and assuage it. A fire not to be quenched, it demands a uniform vigilance to prevent its bursting into a flame, lest, instead of warming, it should consume.

Almost since the signing of the U.S. Constitution into law, partisan politics soon developed, starting with the Federalists and anti-Federalists. As the Democratic and Republican parties developed, sides became more permanently drawn and partisan politics has apparently reached its zenith with the current Congress and presidential administration, as over 380 bills passed by the House languish on the desk of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid who refuses to introduce them before the Senate for debate.  Washington’s foresight, unfortunately, has come to full fruition.

Protecting the sanctity of the Constitution. To Washington and those who labored over the Constitution and to the majority of those in Congress, the Constitution represented the bedrock upon which all current and future law and liberty would depend. It was divinely inspired with God-given individual rights. It was not something to be whimsically changed by partisan politics or by legislative or judicial fiat. To do so would destroy its sanctity and strength. It was a document that was thoughtfully and prayerfully conceived that did and would forever provide the stable foundation upon which all American generations could stand with confidence and security.

Towards the preservation of your government, and the permanency of your present happy state, it is requisite, not only that you steadily discountenance irregular oppositions to its acknowledged authority, but also that you resist with care the spirit of innovation upon its principles, however specious the pretexts. One method of assault may be to effect, in the forms of the Constitution, alterations which will impair the energy of the system, and thus to undermine what cannot be directly overthrown.

. . . a government of as much vigor as is consistent with the perfect security of liberty is indispensable. Liberty itself will find in such a government, with powers properly distributed and adjusted, its surest guardian.

. . . It is important, likewise, that the habits of thinking in a free country should inspire caution in those entrusted with its administration, to confine themselves within their respective constitutional spheres, avoiding in the exercise of the powers of one department to encroach upon another. The spirit of encroachment tends to consolidate the powers of all the departments in one, and thus to create, whatever the form of government, a real despotism. A just estimate of that love of power, and proneness to abuse it, which predominates in the human heart, is sufficient to satisfy us of the truth of this position. The necessity of reciprocal checks in the exercise of political power, by dividing and distributing it into different depositaries, and constituting each the guardian of the public weal against invasions by the others, has been evinced by experiments ancient and modern; some of them in our country and under our own eyes. To preserve them must be as necessary as to institute them. If, in the opinion of the people, the distribution or modification of the constitutional powers be in any particular wrong, let it be corrected by an amendment in the way which the Constitution designates. But let there be no change by usurpation; for though this, in one instance, may be the instrument of good, it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed. The precedent must always greatly overbalance in permanent evil any partial or transient benefit, which the use can at any time yield (my emphasis).

Washington keenly realized that if the three branches of government—Executive, Legislative & Judicial—that the Founders so wisely set forth in the Constitution as distinct entities, with specific purposes and as a check and balance against each other, ever became co-mingled, with one usurping the role and responsibility of the other, it would result in real despotism. Have we not arrived at such a destiny as the Executive ignores the Legislative and makes, institutes and ignores whatever laws it desires?  And, as the Judicial selects what laws it chooses to enforce and modifies or changes those laws it does not like.  Truly, tyranny has arrived in the United States just as Washington feared and predicted.

Public and national debt. Washington was not opposed to indebtedness, but recommended that it should be used sparingly and only in times of national emergency. Whatever national debt that might be incurred “we ourselves ought to bear” it, Washington recommended, rather than pass it on to succeeding generations. When times of peace and prosperity returned, then that was the time to pay off the debt and not pile on more debt, thus increasing the burden for the next generation.

As a very important source of strength and security, cherish public credit. One method of preserving it is to use it as sparingly as possible, avoiding occasions of expense by cultivating peace, but remembering also that timely disbursements to prepare for    danger    frequently   prevent   much    greater disbursements to repel it, avoiding likewise the accumulation of debt, not only by shunning occasions of expense, but by vigorous exertion in time of peace to discharge the debts which unavoidable wars may have occasioned, not ungenerously throwing upon posterity the burden which we ourselves ought to bear.

Unfortunately, America’s national debt situation is out of control and impossible to pay off as politician after politician votes to “kick the can” of debt control down the road year after year. The National Debt will exceed $18 trillion by year-end with “unfunded” liabilities at a staggering $124 trillion.  Yet, congressional and administration spending continues out-of-control with more and more spending bills being whisked through Congress or put into action by Executive Orders.  We continue to send billions abroad, even to our enemies, as jobs and American lifestyles plummet into the basement.  Washington, who received his education in the field of hard knocks, knew what he was talking about.  Too bad no one after him followed his advice.

Foreign relations and national defense. One of the greatest threats to the American style of life and freedom would be the outside adverse influence of non-Americans and foreign governments. Under his scrutiny, these influences would become the destructive “foes of republican government”, Washington believed. Permanent alliances with foreign powers, in Washington’s view, were inadvisable and potentially injurious to American sovereignty and freedom.  Although he was not an isolationist—he saw the need for world trade cooperation—he believed that long-term alliances would be detrimental and not in the enduring best interest of the country.  Foreign entanglements and the large military build-up that might result would be “particularly hostile to republican liberty,” he surmised. For Washington and his fellow patriots who had risked all for the sake of true freedom, they realized that God had blessed them with the formation of the most unique and workable form of government for a free and fully represented people that the world had ever known. To Washington and his like-minded patriots, it was worth protecting at all costs.

Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence . . . the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government.

. . . The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations,  to   have   with   them as little political connection as possible.

. . . It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world . . . .

. . . Taking care always to keep ourselves by suitable establishments on a respectable defensive posture, we may safely trust to temporary alliances for extraordinary emergencies.

Harmony, liberal intercourse with all nations, are recommended by policy, humanity, and interest. But even our commercial policy should hold an equal and impartial hand; neither seeking nor granting exclusive favors or preferences . . . .

. . . Hence, likewise, they will avoid the necessity of those overgrown military establishments which, under any form of government, are inauspicious to liberty, and which are to be regarded as particularly hostile to republican liberty.

When it came to foreign trade, Washington abhorred the idea that one nation would be treated any different than another. To create a “favored nation” status would only cultivate “a variety of evils” for America. As Washington continued his warnings in his farewell speech, he offered this prophetic advice:

. . . a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite nation of privileges denied to others which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained, and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld. And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens (who devote themselves to the favorite nation), facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation.

As avenues to foreign influence in innumerable ways, such attachments are particularly alarming to the truly enlightened and independent patriot. How many opportunities do they afford to tamper with domestic factions, to practice the arts of seduction, to mislead public opinion, to influence or awe the public councils? Such an attachment of a small or weak towards a great and powerful nation dooms the former to be the satellite of the latter.

Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence . . . a free people ought to be constantly awake . . . that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government. . . . Excessive partiality for one foreign nation and excessive dislike of another cause those whom they actuate to see danger only on one side, and serve to veil and even second the arts of influence on the other. Real patriots who may resist the intrigues of the favorite are liable to become suspected and odious, while its tools and dupes usurp the applause and confidence of the people, to surrender their interests (my emphasis).

One of the biggest mistakes America and its politicians has ever made was granting China “favored nation” status under President Bill Clinton. It was virtually a one-sided deal that highly favored China and immediately resulted in a flow of American jobs, technology and manufacturing to China, allowing China to become the world’s strongest economy at the expense of the American worker and American family.  At the same time the American consumer fell in love with “cheap” goods flooding the U.S. market, oblivious to the realization that one day it would cost them their jobs, wages and standard of living.  A nation that cannot produce for itself and exports the production of goods and services abroad is destined for an inferior and declining economy.

The necessity of religion and morality in the citizens and the government. For historians and others who have concluded that Washington was not a man of God, their conclusions would seem to be fallacious and misguided. Washington considered religion and morality two of the “great pillars of human happiness.” Indeed, religion and morality were “indispensable supports” for political prosperity. In fact, in his view, any person that would seek to undermine these pillars could not be considered to be a patriot. If one subverted the religious foundation of the country, “Where,” asked Washington, “is the security for property, for reputation, for life . . .?” As for individual or national morality, he believed it could not be maintained in the absence of religious education and acted upon principles of faith. It was and would always be that religion and morality would be the foundation of a good and just government.

Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked: Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert  the oaths which are   the   instruments of investigation in courts of justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.

It is substantially true that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule, indeed, extends with more or less force to every species of free government.

. . . Observe good faith and justice towards all nations; cultivate peace and harmony with all. Religion and morality enjoin this conduct; and can it be, that good policy does not equally enjoin it? It will be worthy of a free, enlightened, and at no distant period, a great nation, to give to mankind the magnanimous and too novel example of a people always guided by an exalted justice and benevolence.

It would be no great surprise to Washington if he were able to observe the state of affairs in America today. After all, he warned, without a foundation of biblical morality and virtue it would be impossible to have an effective and just government and society.  Without the strong and clear foundation of religion—and he meant Christianity—America would soon collapse into an immoral society lead by despotic leaders.

America, you have arrived. You were properly and prophetically warned by our nation’s finest leader.
