God’s Warning through Jeremiah, a Word for the U.S.?

June 14, 2020

James F. Gauss

Excerpted, in part, from Revelation 18 and the Fate of America.

Rev 18

In 627 B.C., thirty years before the reign of Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, God raised up Jeremiah, another powerful prophet of warning. Because Jeremiah was constantly telling the kings and people of Judah of their impending doom if they did not turn back to God, he was not a very popular prophet and his life was threatened many times. He spoke God’s word during the reign of five kings of Judah: Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin and Zedekiah. Of the five, only Josiah (640-609 B.C.) followed the dictates of God’s heart.

Toward the beginning of Jeremiah’s ministry, God reminded Judah of their heritage and how they had profaned it. “I brought you into a bountiful country, to eat its fruit and its goodness. But when you entered, you defiled My land and made My heritage an abomination.  The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’ And those who handle the law did not know Me; the rulers also transgressed against Me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit” (Jeremiah 2:7-8).

“‘Your own wickedness will correct you’, God decreed through Jeremiah. “‘And your backslidings will rebuke you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing that you have forsaken the Lord your God, and the fear of Me is not in you,’ says the Lord God of hosts” (Jeremiah 2:19).

God told Jeremiah that life for the people of Judah was going to get so bad that he did not want Jeremiah to get married or raise children (Jeremiah 16:1-2).

“And it shall be, when you show this people all these words, and they say to you, ‘Why has the Lord pronounced all this great disaster against us? Or what is our iniquity? Or what is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?’  then you shall say to them, ‘Because your fathers have forsaken Me,’ says the Lord; ‘they have walked after other gods and have served them and worshiped them, and have forsaken Me and not kept My law.  And you have done worse than your fathers, for behold, each one follows the dictates of his own evil heart, so that no one listens to Me.  Therefore I will cast you out of this land into a land that you do not know, neither you nor your fathers; and there you shall serve other gods day and night, where I will not show you favor.’ (Jeremiah 16:10-13)

God’s continued warning through Jeremiah.

The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it.  And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will relent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it (Jeremiah 18:7-10).

Nevertheless, the people were determined to go their evil ways. “And they said, ‘That is hopeless! [that is, turning back to God (Jeremiah 18:11)] so we will walk according to our own plans, and we will every one obey the dictates of his evil heart” (Jeremiah 18:12).

Once again, God sent them a harsh warning about their disobedience and turning from Him. “Because My people have forgotten Me,” God spoke through Jeremiah, “they have burned incense to worthless idols. And they have caused themselves to stumble in their ways, from the ancient paths, to walk in pathways and not on a highway, to make their land desolate and a perpetual hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and shake his head.  I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will show them the back and not the face in the day of their calamity.”

Rather than heed God’s repeated forewarnings of disaster ahead, the people hated Jeremiah and persecuted him. Even the priest and chief governor of the house of the Lord, Pashur, was so enraged by Jeremiah’s words that he hit Jeremiah and had him put in stocks. This harsh treatment did not deter Jeremiah and the day after he was released from the stocks he came before Pashur and told him that God no longer called him Pashur (prosperity), but that his name was now Magor-Missabib (fear on every side). Furthermore, God told Jeremiah that Babylon would invade Judah (which it did in 605 and 597 B.C.) and that Pashur and his fellow residents of Judah would be taken captive to Babylon (Jeremiah 20:3-6).

Two years after the beginning of Jeremiah’s ministry, in 625 B.C., Nabopolassar became the first king of a new Babylonian dynasty and Babylon would enter what would be known as her “golden age”. In 612 B.C. Nabopolassar and his army would capture and destroy Nineveh in Assyria (current-day Iraq east of the Tigris River) and by 608 B.C. Assyria would collapse under Babylon’s invasion.

The year before Assyria’s fall, Jehoahaz became the king of Judah, but only reigned three months before Necho, the king of Egypt, invaded Judah and took him prisoner (2 Kings 23:31-33). Necho then took Eliakim, Josiah’s son; changed his name to Jehoiakim and made him king of Judah. Just like Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim was an evil king and submitted to Necho’s stiff tribute of gold and silver, “. . . he [Jehoiakim] taxed the land to give money according to the command of Pharaoh; he exacted the silver and gold from the people of the land, from every one according to his assessment to give it to Pharaoh Necho” (2 Kings 23:35).

Jehoiakim served as Pharaoh’s vassal until 605 B.C. when King Nebuchadnezzar II, son of Nabopolassar, invaded Jerusalem. Nebuchadnezzar then made Jehoiakim his servant king in Judah. Jehoiakim eventually rebelled against the king of Babylon and Nebuchanezzar after paying three years of tribute to the Babylonian king. “And the Lord sent against him raiding bands of Chaldeans, bands of Syrians, bands of Moabites, and bands of the people of Ammon; He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord which He had spoken by His servants the prophets. Surely at the commandment of the Lord this came upon Judah, to remove them from His sight because of the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he had done,” (2 Kings 24:2-3).

Once again, around 598 B.C., Nebuchadnezzar came against Judah, pillaged it and took Jehoiakim, bound in fetters, prisoner to Babylon. Judah replaced Jehoiakim with his 18 year old son (some manuscripts say “eight”), Jehoiachin, who reigned only three months before Nebuchadnezzar had him, his family and his entire court taken prisoner to Babylon (2 Kings 24:8-12). Now Jerusalem and all of Judah was under the control of the king of Babylon.

Although Jeremiah’s ministry was thousands of years ago to Israel, does Israel’s history have a lesson and a warning for the United States? I believe it does. The experience and history of the U.S. and its falling away from God very much parallels that of ancient Israel. America has become a wicked an evil place where evil is good and good is evil. Where the church has been powerless to stop the excising of prayer and the Bible from American education; stop abortion; stop perversion; stop Marxist education of our children; stop the decline of the family, and much more. In fact, instead of standing against the evil of the day, far too many churches have embraced it. To turn things around, Apostle Peter warned that God’s judgment must start with His house, the church (1 Peter 4:17). So be it!

“Trial by Fire”

A Sermon by the late Dr. Peter Marshall

(Transcribed by James F, Gauss)

During America’s most trying time since the Civil War ―in the midst of the Great Depression and during the onset of World War II―there arose in America an immigrant Scottish preacher that held the ear of America and particularly the rapt attention of its political leaders in Washington. His name was Peter Marshall. Born in Coatbridge, Scotland in 1904, he arrived in America in 1927 with all the worldly wealth of a pauper.

After a year of working in New Jersey, he followed a fellow immigrant Scotsman to Birmingham, Alabama. Members of his church soon recognized God’s calling on his life and his Sunday school class helped pay his way through seminary in Atlanta. He started his ministry at a small church in Covington, Georgia, but was soon called to preach and pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. His charisma and powerful, down-to-earth sermons soon began to draw overflow crowds on Sunday mornings, with people standing outside to the blare of loud speakers in order to glean the nuggets of biblical truths that he preached.

By 1937 he had attracted the attention of the presbyters at the well-known New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. In all humility he resisted their call, but finally succumbed to their persistence, trusting that God would give him the wisdom and ability for such a high pastoral station.

Preaching fluently in a thick, rolling-off-the-tongue Scottish burr, Dr. Marshall enthralled standing-room-only crowds wherever he exhorted the faithful. His devotion and sincerity before the Lord, along with his down-home wholesomeness soon attracted members of the U.S. Senate, as well as captured the hearts of the American people, young and old alike.

Early in January, 1947 he graciously accepted his election as the 57th Chaplain to the U.S. Senate and served until his untimely death at age 45 on January 25, 1949. Senators made it a point to arrive early so they wouldn’t miss his eloquent prayers.   This foreword presents a prophetic sermon by Dr. Marshall, that was not only pertinent for the time and audience for which it was preached, but one that is eerily timeless and apropos for America and its inhabitants of today. It was Dr. Marshall’s fourth and last sermon for the week at the St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Orleans, Louisiana on Saturday, March 11, 1944.

The following sermon by the late Dr. Peter Marshall was transcribed by James F. Gauss from an audio tape provided by Dr. Marshall’s now deceased son, Rev. Peter J. Marshall. While many of his prayers in the U.S. Senate were printed in national publications of the day, as far as can be ascertained, this is the first time that this powerful audio-taped sermon has been transcribed and published. It is presented here in its entirety and also in Dr. Gauss’ book, Revelation 18 and the Fate of America. It is long, but well worth your time and sharing with others.

Trial by Fire

Dr. Peter Marshall

March 11, 1944

My text is taken from the first book of Kings, chapter 18, and verse 21: “If the Lord be God, follow Him! But if Baal, then follow him!”

The setting of the text is one of the most dramatic in the Old Testament. The leaders of the nation, including the king, had come together to make a great decision. It was a national emergency; something had to be done.

Elijah, the prophet, had called them to meet on Mount Carmel to settle no less a question than whom should they worship.

It was a day of choice―a day of destiny.

William Penn said, “That men must be governed by God, or they will be ruled by tyrants.”

Here, then, was an ancient Hebrew prophet facing the very same issue, and making his people face it with him.

They all knew the history of their nation. A lot of their fathers had come out of the wilderness; out of bondage into a new land as pioneers. Behind them were great leaders. Moses and Aaron and Joshua―men who had been led by God. They had set up, not a democracy, but a theocracy―a state governed by God.

The true God and His holy law had been written into the nation’s constitution. The Ten Commandments had been to them a Bill of Rights and a Declaration of Dependence. The leaders of the young nation had taken God as their King and Sovereign. They had ample reason to believe―having seen it worked out in their own history―that righteousness alone exalted a nation, and that, that nation was only blessed whose God was the Lord. They had seen it work in the past. Their national history was proof. They had been taught that obedience to the laws of God was the only foundation for national greatness, liberty and security.

As long as the nation could recognize God as Supreme, it could stand. But something had been happening in the national light. The faith and the vision of the founding fathers had faded. Moral decay had set in. There was confusion in the minds of the people. They were beginning to forget the principles that had made them a nation. They had begun to love things more than principles.

All around them paganism flourished. Their neighbors were not without god. They had gods, many of them. Convenient gods. Gods that could be worshipped in ways that appealed to the lower nature.

Materialism had a god. His name was Baal. He offered to his devotees things that human instincts craved. He was a god of the flesh.   His priests encouraged the people to follow their natural inclinations. It was worship and indulgence expressed in lust and adorned in selfishness. It had no inhibitions at all.

It said, “Look after number one! Be yourself. Be natural.” Self-expressions and natural instincts was its program. A good time for everyone according to the flesh, was its goal.

No wonder it grew in popularity.

But still, Israel was confused. Their inheritances of the past―the early teachings of their parents―were not forgotten. Something of conscience was not yet drugged, and they were confused and uneasy. They took a little of Jehovah and a little of Baal. They became by degrees more and more broadminded. Was it not a free country? Who wanted to be old fashioned?

So, morality became a relative thing. The old absolutes were regarded as far too intolerant. The national moral standards were lowered. The worship of Baal and Jehovah got mixed. Somehow, it was hard to draw a line of distinction. Materialism and idealism were often confused.

Now, Elijah saw the danger. He saw what would happen to the nation when its moral fiber was weakened. He knew the end of confusion and indecision. He believed with all

his heart, that national ruin and disaster were inevitable if the nation preempted Jehovah and departed from its charter and constitution.

So he summoned the leaders of the country together on this day of destiny.

“If the Lord be God, follow Him! But, if Baal, then follow him!”

It was a time now for men to take sides. There was no middle ground. They could not be neutral. They had to be on one side or the other. They had to decide whether their nation would be governed by God or ruled by tyrants.

Elijah saw that Israel as a nation could go with God and Baal. It had to be God or Baal. He was a fearless man, this Elijah. He faced the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, the king and the nation’s leaders. It had to be either, or. They had to get on one side or the other.

Remember the dramatic test, the trial by fire? On the slopes of Carmel with the copper sky above them and the parched, sun-baked plains of Jezreel at their feet, the people stood waiting.

Elijah announced his proposed test. Let the matter be decided once and for all. Let sacrifices be laid on the altar. Let him be God who will send down fire and consume the offering. Let Baal have the advantage of priority. Let his priests have the first inning. Everything would be in their favor. The sun climbing to meridian would be at its height. There were four hundred and fifty of them, and if they all prayed, that would be a lot of prayers. Let them call upon their god and let him answer if he could.

Then began the weird pagan performance with Elijah jibbing at them with pointed sarcasm. His words had blades in them. His taunts were razor sharp.

“Cry louder! Why don’t you? Cry louder! He is a god you are crying to. Well, he must be talking to somebody. He must be in the chase. Or perhaps he has gone for a walk. Peradventure he is asleep. He may be taking a nap. Cry louder! Wake him up!”

He taunted them all day long until they were all at the point of exhaustion. Hoarse with their shouting, weary with their dancing. Bleeding and wounding―since in their frenzy they cut themselves, hoping the sight of their own blood spouting from tired arms and legs might cause Baal to relent and to answer. They carried on until evening. But there was neither a voice nor any to answer, nor any that regard it.

Then Elijah, confident and unhurried, called the people closer. And, going over to an abandoned, broken down Jehovah altar, Elijah had them set upon it a sacrifice and drenched it three times with water. Even to make the test more impressive, he soaked the whole altar with water that ran into a trench dug all around it.

Then his prayer to Jehovah―not ranting, or foaming, or shouting. And it was answered in fire that consumed the sacrifice; licked up the water in the trench, and, to the people looking on, cried, as they fell on their faces, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”

Now, I suggest to you that America needs prophets today―men, and women too, because more than once in history, a woman’s voice has stated the issues clearly―to set before the nation the essential choices.

God, give us men! A time like this demands strong minds, great hearts, true faith, and ready hands. Men, whom the lust of office does not kill. Men, whom the spoils of office cannot buy. Men who possess an opinion and a will. Men who have honor. Men who will not lie. Men who can stand before a demagogue and damn his treacherous flatteries without winking. Tall men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog in public duty and in private thinking [1].

For, while the rabble with their thumb-worn creeds, their large professions and little deeds mingled in selfish strife―lo, freedom weeps. Wrong rules the land, and waiting justice, sleeps.

We are engaged in total war and fighting for total victory. Well, it will not be won outside the United States alone. It must be won at home, as well as in Europe and the Pacific.

There are evil forces plotting within the nation as well. For men have become lovers of themselves, more than lovers of their country. All traitors are not enemy agents. Espionage and sabotage are not the only weapons that harm a war effort. Love of power and authority has enslaved the hearts of many Americans.

The seeds of racial hate and intolerance have been sown. And we will reap a bitter harvest. As recent events [race riots] in Detroit and both Boston and Los Angeles have indicated.

Our moral standards have been lowered. Our national moral standards―and no nation makes progress in a downward direction.

The growth of addiction to alcoholic beverages, for example, by women, as well as by men, in great numbers, is of great concern to every patriotic American who loves his country and is anxious about her future. And not all of those concerned are cranks, bluenoses or killjoys. Perhaps it is unfortunate, that those who speak for temperance in the newsreels are not particularly photogenic to begin with, but they are usually posed and quoted in such a way as to provoke derisive laughter in our theaters. The cause of temperance is not advanced, and we who are concerned about it can’t help wondering what will happen to a country that apparently is no longer aware of the dangers.

Illustrations could be multiplied, both of the decay of morals and of the activity of evil forces in our midst. The old time evangelists use to express the tragedy of men and women individually going to hell. But we don’t hear much about that nowadays. Because they say people don’t believe in hell. But I notice that they talk a lot about it in their conversations.

But today we are living in a time when enough individuals choosing to go to hell will pull the nation down to hell with them.

The choices you make in moral and religious questions determine the way America will go. We badly need a prophet who will have the ear of America and who will say, “If the Lord be God, follow Him! But if Baal, then follow him!”

We must decide and decide quickly who is chief―whom we will serve. Millions of people in America live in moral fog. The issues are not clear to them. They cannot face the light that makes them black or white. They want grays and neutral picks. They move in sort of a spiritual twilight. Modified morality on the basis of cleverness guides millions of people. Modified dishonesty within the letter of the law is the practice of millions more.

Surely the time has come―because the hour is late―when we must decide. The choice before us is plain: Jehovah or Baal? Christ or chaos? Conviction or compromise? Discipline or disintegration?

I have not stated the matter too strongly. You may agree mildly or you may disagree violently, but the time has come to face the duties and obligations of our citizenship and willing to assume the disciplines imposed by the things we believe in before we are forced to accept the disciplines of tyranny.

I, for one am rather tired about hearing about our rights and privileges as American citizens. The time has come and now is, when we ought to hear about the duties and responsibilities of our citizenship. It’s just as plain and clear as that.

The average church member has forgotten and forsaken the old disciplines. He attends services when it is convenient. His contribution of time and money is seldom such as to involve sacrifice on his part. The church, the Word, the sacraments have no compulsion over his life apparently. Of course, to be honest about it, the fault is not alone that of the church member. The ministry, the church officers, are also involved in blame, because the church has failed to challenge the faith and vision of the lay people in the pews. The programs of too many churches call for neither effort nor sacrifice―all of that is sadly true.

The remedy for this sad state of affairs will lie, I believe, in the seeking God’s will for the individual church, and the adopting of a daring program to which He is challenging us all. Our strength is limited only by our faith in asking God’s help.

“According to your faith be it unto you.”

That is the measure that would enable us to move mountains. Or, if our faith be limited, to cause us to stumble over mole hills.

So also in the affairs of a nation. “If the Lord be God, follow Him! But, if Baal, then follow him!”

Now, let us be honest about it. If we have thrown away our national heritage; if we no longer believe this nation was founded under God; if, contrary to what is stamped upon our coins, our trust is not in God but in something else, let us say so. Let us at least not be hypocrites.

A nation led by God will lead the world. The world today has many open doors, open to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Peoples ready and waiting for the spiritual leadership that could steer the storm-tossed ark of humanity away from the rocks of war and the shoals of selfishness and greed.

Our own country, with all of its sophistication, is filled with people who are hungry for the Gospel. Satiated with the materialistic philosophies that filled our stomachs and starved our souls; that supplied gadgets while they forgot God.

America’s future depends on her accepting and demonstrating God’s government. If America listens to God; if America obeys God, then she can be great among the nations. Here, in America, we have the people, we have the means of communication, we have the genius and the skill, we have the political forums, the wealth, the natural resources, the prestige, and the ability to lead the whole world into a new and bright tomorrow in which dreams and hopes of the human heart may be achieved and the desires and the prayers of the nations all realized in a world where there can be life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness available to all men, regardless of their race or their color, because that is precisely what God wishes for all His creatures.

It seems to any student of history, that God has been preparing this great nation to fulfill a destiny in the world. There are many who believe that her first great chance came in nineteen hundred and twenty, when the Christian idealism of a great man, Woodrow Wilson, was not shared by many in power in the Congress―who lacked the vision and idealism of the President.

America refused to accept her destiny in 1920. It may be that God is giving her another chance now. And in the days that follow, as the war enters its final phases, the issues are becoming clearer. Will we fail again? We need to learn and to understand that God can guide and can control in government, in business, in labor, in management, in the home and in the heart of every individual, until the whole nation is under God’s control.

Men can be in touch with God. In every situation, men can know the will of God. They can know exactly what God wants them to do and to be. God’s plans and God’s power are always available. When men seek God, they find Him and are found of Him. When men listen, God speaks. When men give God a chance, He works out His plan. He has a plan for every human life. He has a plan for you and for me. He has a plan for America―and all who truly love America will want America to follow it. But America cannot follow it until we―you and I―as individuals, follow it.

Do you know what God wants you to do? Do you know what God wants you to be? He will tell you, if you ask Him. He will speak, if you give Him a chance―if you listen.

It is not enough that our leaders should be guided by God. The people must be guided also. It is not enough that the minister of the church should seek to discover the will of God, the congregation, likewise, must discover it and follow it.

One challenge that these critical days have flung down to the church people, is that we begin to be truly Christian in all of our relationships, or stop pretending.

When our fighting men come back from Italy, Germany and from Japan, they are going to be brutally frank and honest. They will see through hypocrisy. They know now the things that really count in life and they will not be deceived by displays of piety, or by sham and show. They will look for changed lives. For different ways of living. For different ways of dealing with servants, with employers and with employees. Different standards of values; different outlooks upon life; different dispositions.

It is a lot of nonsense what the beautifully colored advertisements are saying in our magazines―that our fighting men want to come back to an America totally unchanged. That is nonsense! The men who are on the fighting fronts now, know full well; know far more clearly than they ever did before, the things in America that must be changed if their sacrifice is to be worthwhile.

We must not be the same people they left behind. We must be worthy of their sacrifices. We must be worthy of the blood that has been and will be shed. Surely the issue is crystal clear. And they are returning now on hospital ships. They are being guided down the gangplank with bandaged eyes. They are coming creaking, swinging on creaking crutches to stand again on wounded feet on American soil. They are coming with their arms in slings; with empty sleeves tucked in tunic pockets. They are coming with trouser legs pinned up, to stand again on the America for which they fought and bled. And they are hearing in their ears, the newsboys call the headlines” “Twenty-thousand men on strike.” What for? For higher wages? No, not this time. For better living conditions? No, not this time. What then in God’s name? What for? Because of strife and difference between rival labor unions. Jurisdictional disputes. Men seeking power and influence. Men seeking to exalt themselves. Men seeking selfishly their own interests in a time of national crisis.

They hear of squabbles in the Senate as to how the soldiers are to vote. They hear all that with disillusionment. They hear of so many of their fellow countrymen and countrywomen who seem to be totally unaware of the issues involved. And they look at the empty sleeves stuck in tunic pockets. They look at trouser legs pinned up to stumps of legs. They look at the wounds and the scars and the bandages and they ask themselves, Was it worth it?

Was it worth it to storm Tarawa [2]? Was it worth it to fly over the acrid-filled skies over Berlin? Was it worth it to land at Palermo [Sicily, Italy] and leave a leg at Salerno [Campania, Italy] [3]? Was it worth it? To come back to a country that wants to be the same, apparently. That wants to have its selfishness entrenched and encouraged and enforced. Is it worthwhile to shed your blood for people who do not seem to realize that they have got to change? That America must be worth the sacrifices that are being made for her now on every battle front. Was it worthwhile?

We must make the answer, “Yes, by God it was!” We must somehow convince them who have given up legs and not in vain.

Life magazine [December 27, 1943, page 28], in its Christmas issue, has a magnificent editorial from which I shall like to quote this paragraph:

“…The lackadaisical days when it didn’t matter much whether you were a Christian or not, may be numbered. If the reassertion grows strong you may have to declare yourself more definitely than you ever expected, as to whether you believe in the word of Christ―or do not. This choice, if it is really forced on the Christian world, may be the choice that leads finally to the long-awaited religious revival; a revival born in the hearts of the citizens of our time, who, when forced to choose, will find no truth, no comfort, and no inspiration elsewhere.”

We need a prophet who will have the ear of America and say to her now, “How long will you halt and stand between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow Him! But if Baal be god, follow him!” and go to hell.

Oh God, bless America. May our prayer not be and empty whine of selfish pride and arrogant stupidity. But may it rather be a humble, contrite plea to the God of all nations to make this land that we love so well worth defending; worth fighting for; worth dying for. Oh God, help us to make America God’s country.

And now, may the love of God the Father, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the abiding fellowship of God, the Holy Spirit, rest upon us now and abide with us forevermore. Amen.

Dr. Peter Marshall, Sr.

Dr. Marshall’s sermon of over 76 years ago is not only prophetic but clearly illustrates not only how little America has changed but how much more depraved it has become since his day.

“Illustrations could be multiplied, both of the decay of morals and of the activity of evil forces in our midst,” Dr. Marshall preached. “The old time evangelists use to express the tragedy of men and women individually going to hell. But we don’t hear much about that nowadays. Because they say people don’t believe in hell. But I notice that they talk a lot about it in their conversations.

“But today we are living in a time when enough individuals choosing to go to hell will pull the nation down to hell with them.

“The choices you make in moral and religious questions determine the way America will go. We badly need a prophet who will have the ear of America and who will say, ‘If the Lord be God, follow Him! But if Baal, then follow him!’”

Despite Dr. Marshall’s impassioned plea 76 years ago and that of dozens of preachers since, it is abundantly clear that the people of America have decided to follow Baal, the god of licentiousness and depravity.

Author’s notes.

[1] This poem, God Give Us Men! was by puritan descendent, Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881) and was a favorite of Dr. Marshall.

[2] Tarawa atoll is part of Gilbert Islands in the central Pacific. The small (2.5 miles by 800-foot at its widest) island of Betio was occupied by a small but determined Japanese force that guarded a very strategic military runway. On November 20, 1943, the U.S. Marines with U.S. Navy support offshore launched a tenacious four-day amphibious assault. The taking of this “one square mile of hell” as it was later called, cost the lives of 1,000 marines and 4,000 Japanese soldiers, but was considered to be the “pivotal event” of the military operations in the Pacific theater. The capture of tiny Betio eventually led to a strong U.S. military presence in the Marshall Islands, which provided allied forces with a strike force to hit mainland Japan and thus end the war in the Pacific with the surrender of the Japanese on September 2, 1945.

[3] Both Palermo and Salerno are sites in Italy where there was bitter American fighting against stubborn German resistance during World War II.

This prophetic sermon by Dr. Peter Marshall was published for the first time in Revelation 18 and the fate of America by James F. Gauss in 2013.

Whom Do We Serve?

James F. Gauss, Ph.D.

May 22, 2020

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.  Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.

Romans 13:1-2

There you have it: “Submit to the governing authorities.” Our excuse not to be bold and courageous and to be submissive to secular rule. I am tired of this scripture being thrown in the faces of Christians every time Christian leadership is too hesitant to do what God commands them to do.

This admonition by Paul to the new Christians in Rome has nothing to do with the church submitting to ungodly authority. It is an instruction for individuals to be good citizens and follow just laws.

Regardless of your own interpretation of Paul’s words, my question to pastors as one of Christ’s shepherds is: Who is the head of your church? Christ or the government? You know the answer, so I will refrain from providing it.

As a World War II baby I grew up in segregated America. Although we lived in a multi-racial, multi-ethnic rural neighborhood in the northeast of the nation, I was pretty much oblivious to racial injustice. That all changed with a rude awakening when I decided to attend college in the deep south in 1960. As a friendly, naïve northerner, my inclination was to make friends with anyone, no matter what their station in life or skin color. That got me in trouble real quick. Hold on, there’s a point to this diversion.

The school was, of course, lily white and mostly born and bred southerners. All the menial jobs on campus and elsewhere were performed by black men and women who were paid a token 50-cents per hour (minimum wage was $1.00). I cringed at the way I saw my fellow southern students treat the black workers. They were repeatedly offensive, disrespectful and always playing pranks on these hard working people. Partly as a result, I befriended a number of the workers. Largely to let them know that not everyone thought ill of them or saw them as subhuman, not deserving of respect. And, I paid a small price, as southern students in my dorm pulled pranks on me to show their displeasure. However, that did not deter me, and I showed the same respect to blacks off campus too.

I write this, not to elevate myself, but to illustrate a forthcoming point. This was the “civil rights” era of Martin Luther King, Jr., Medgar Evers and many more black and white civil rights leaders. They emerged from their churches to fight for justice for all under the U.S. Constitution. During the spring semester of my freshman year, a young black man from South Carolina, Harvey Gantt (look him up), wanted to attend my school’s acclaimed architectural school. At the time, I was taking a class on U.S. government. One day the professor stood before the class and proclaimed, that if this “nigger” tried to integrate the school, they would lynch him. Needless to say, it was the only course I ever failed, because I withdrew the next day.

There are many stories I could share, but my point is this: Where would America and black Americans be today, if pastors and Christians, continued to obey the segregated “law” of the South and ignored the unjust treatment of fellow Americans and brothers and sisters in Christ? For Freedom Fighters of that era, there was no question, no hesitation for them, “on what would Jesus do?” Jesus would defy unjust authority, just like He did with the Pharisees who sought to kill Him.

How many followers of Christ were persecuted, tortured and brutally killed during the first century of the Church because they refused to submit to the authorities? Despite the constant threats from multiple sources they continued to meet, pray corporately and preach the Gospel and minister to the saints of Christ.

Throughout the centuries, hundreds of millions of Christ followers have lost their lives because they refused to deny Christ or stop practicing their faith. Fast forward to today. Around the world, in such oppressive environments as China, SE Asia, Iran, the Middle East, parts of Africa and elsewhere, bold and courageous warriors for Christ daily defy the powers to be and risk their lives to meet, pray, worship, testify, break bread, study God’s word, etc.

What can we say; what can you say to these brothers and sisters in Christ who risk everything for the cause of Christ, while we humbly submit to our local and state “lord and masters?” Pastors and congregants, who controls your church? The government or Christ and His body of believers?

Yes, I get all the health concerns of this “pandemic.” I also know that it now has been proven that it was grossly overblown. There was absolutely no need to shut down America’s economy and certainly no need to shutter our churches. Yes, I know, the church is not the building, I fully understand that. This whole mess, as far as I’m concerned, shows just how weak the church is in America. The church has always had the ability and willingness to take care of its own, including the infirm and needy. It does not need the permission or instructions from the state or other “authorities.” I would submit that each church and each pastor knows how to protect and minister to their vulnerable members without the dictates from the state.

Think about it, pastors. What will you do next time, you are told to shut down your church? And, there will be a next time. After all, the authorities found out just how easy it was to scare you into submission. What stand will you take and with whom will you stand? As a reminder, the church is to be God’s “salt” and “light” under any conditions, and at all times. It is to show the way, not be told which way to go by godless authority. Before COVID-19, other than for weather related reasons, when was the last time you shuttered your church because somebody told you to? When will be the next time?

What if, instead of fully closing down, non-vulnerable and willing church members came together in corporate prayer and fasting, confessing their sins and the sins of the country, repenting and calling upon God’s mercy and seeking His intervention on behalf of their loved ones and the country. Would we be in a different and better place today? Yes, I know thousands of Christians were doing that on their own, but the power of the corporate prayer of the Body of Christ cannot be understated. This would have been an excellent time for churches across America to have been praying for much needed revival throughout our nation.

And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two,

and gave them power over unclean spirits.

But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:7

(I am deliberately leaving out my sources to encourage you to do your own research. It is incumbent upon you to be diligent and wise. If not for yourself, think of the future this COVID-driven hysteria is creating for your children and grandchildren.)

I am a World War II baby, born right after the start of that Great War. I grew up in an era of contagious diseases. Polio and tuberculosis (TB), in particular, were the scourges of the country and there was nothing at the time to stop them. But there was also German (yes, GERMAN) measles, chicken pox, the mumps (all viruses) and the potentially deadly scarlet fever. These were the common plagues of my youth. Just about all my friends and myself contracted the big three—measles, pox and mumps. Admittedly, they could be serious, but usually not life threatening.

For those who came down with polio or TB, they received treatment and often with severe cases of TB, the sufferers were sent to TB sanitariums to help them get better. In some cases, the sick were isolated (quarantined), but the healthy continued life as usual. I vaguely remember being “quarantined” in the hospital for some reason as a young child. I remember being in a room (maybe ward) with other children with the same disease. But my family was not quarantined.

I get it! I understand that COVID-19 can be dangerous, and initially, little was supposedly known about it and its virulence. In the past, there have been far greater disease threats or other perils to the American public, but none of them resulted in a virtual complete shutdown of the American economy and way of life, or the freedom of movement and expression. Why? Why is this so different?

For you Trumpers out there (and I’m still one), I believe President Trump has been doing an Herculean job in trying to keep things together, but I believe he has been outnumbered, bamboozled and grossly misled, as well as outright lied to repeatedly, as have been the American people. Keep this thought in mind from here on: “Let no good crisis go to waste.”

Let’s be clear, “The Virus” did not create the crisis with which we now find ourselves trying to survive. Politicians and wayward health “professionals” did and continue to do. Politicians and medical “advisors” knew early on what we were dealing with, but instead of promoting calm and reason, ratcheted up the hysteria and misinformation on a 24/7 schedule ad nauseam. After three months of infection alerts, data accumulation and two months of “lockdown” the facts illustrate that COVID-19 is no more impactive than the annual flu. Hold on! Before you mask wearers get in an uproar. The “authorities” knew early on that COVID-19 was the biggest threat to the elderly or those with other morbidity issues (heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc). The statistics bear that out. Depending on the sources and states one looks at, the vast majority of deaths that are COVID-related (85-90%) are in those two risk groups. Healthy seniors and healthy children and adults under age 65 are at very low risk for this disease.

Overall, across the country, less than 0.02% of people have confirmed cases, but not necessarily sick from the disease. Of those who actually have symptoms of COVID-19, again, less than 0.02% have died. However, here’s the caveat: the statistics for COVID-19 have been grossly skewed upward from the very beginning to mislead the public and maintain a certain level of panic among the populace. Don’t believe me? Do your own research. Medical professionals on the front line all over the country have been coming forward and testifying that they have been told, coerced or forced to code virtually every death during the COVID scare as a viral death. Check the CDC data for deaths from other causes, like heart attack, cancer, etc. during this period. Particularly, for high COVID-incidence states, like debt riddled and poorly governed New York.

It was recently revealed that in NY, as COVID deaths mounted, deaths from heart disease (down 85%) and cancer (down 87%) dramatically dropped. Hmmmm! How does that happen? People have less heart attacks during one of the most stressful times in the nation’s history? However, NY is not alone. Similar stats show up in other states and as a nation. Why would politicians and medical administrators want to artificially inflate the COVID numbers? On the political side, to keep the panic stoked so that they could push through their non-COVID political agenda while people were totally focused on this manufactured crisis. For medical facilities it was a survival strategy. Since the government put hospitals and clinics on lockdown except for COVID patients, hospitals and clinics were starving for cash. For each COVID patient, the government promised to reimburse the medical facility $13,000. For each patient they put on a respirator, they would get $39,000. However, now there have been reports, in which many patients have died, not from COVID directly, but from faulty or prolonged use of respirators.

I do not fault the medical institutions entirely. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN reported a few weeks ago that they expect to lose $3 billion this year. Many rural hospitals, already struggling financially, may have to close before this all settles out. And why? Because elite bureaucrats thought it was a good idea to hamstring every medical institution in the country and forbid them to carry on business as usual? Why not let each individual facility develop their own game plan that would enable them to survive and still serve their communities? Too much common sense or a plot of socialized medicine?

The Restaurant Debacle. Thousands of small businesses are falling prey to two months of closures. Thousands of restaurants, some in business for generations will never re-open. Many that do re-open may not make it to the end of the year under the draconian re-opening guidelines, unless they are very well capitalized. Restaurants (not the fast food guys) have already missed out on three big weekends (Easter, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day) in most states, plus millions of birthdays, weddings, graduations and other celebrations. With punitive re-opening guidelines by almighty governors that will make it nearly impossible to make a profit, it is hard to see many restaurants surviving. In Minnesota, for example, the governor’s new edict on May 20 will benevolently allow restaurants and bars to re-open on June 1, but only at 50% capacity (but no more than 50 people total) and only for outdoor patio “dine-in” or take-out customers. No more than 4 people per table (6 if family) and tables must be 6 feet apart. Apparently, it does not matter if your restaurant was designed to hold 25, 50, 100 or 500 diners, you are still limited to 50% and a maximum of 50 customers.

Both staff and customers must wear masks. In Minnesota, where there is maybe five months of clement weather, how many restaurants and bars have outdoor patios sufficient to replace only 50% of their clientele? Not too many would be my guess. In addition, not too many restaurants or bars can prosper at 50% capacity, especially during anticipated busy weekends. So sorry, but you may be saying goodbye to your favorite restaurant or restaurants forever.

Church. Now, here’s the real sore spot for me. With 501 c3 designation controlling the freedom of expression of most churches in America, the church, by-and-large has been indebted to the government, both state and federal. Many leftist democratic states are preventing churches from opening up as long as they can, and when they are “allowed” they face very restrictive “guidelines” that hamper their ministries. Minnesota, where churches have been forcibly vacated for about two months, is a good illustration. On May 20, Governor Walz (D-MN) offered up his umpteenth edict. While Big Box stores like Wal Mart and others have been allowed to stay open, where hundreds and thousands of people are in and out all day and night, churches have been shuttered. The overwhelming majority of churches across the country have readily complied, many even citing Romans 13 as their required act of obedience. But now, the patience is wearing thin and parishioners or congregants are putting pressure on their church leaders to get off the fence and do what Jesus would do for His people and His church.

Back to Governor Walz of Minnesota. Walz declared that churches, along with salons, gyms, tattoo parlors (yes, churches are linked to tattoo parlors, don’tcha know), fitness centers, theaters, etc. will have to wait until sometime this summer to possibly, maybe, receive their decree from the almighty powers to be, to re-open.

However, what will church look like in the post-virus craze? Right now, groups over 10 are verboten. Maybe 50 will be permitted. Some things are likely to be required. Maintain social distancing of six feet, wear your mask, and avoid all personal contact and no more than 25-50% capacity. Think about it, if you are a pastor or church member. How will this affect your church culture and cohesiveness? No more welcoming handshakes. No more nestling together with friends in the same pew or seating arrangement. No more extending the hand of fellowship as is common in many churches during the service. No more laying on of hands or group corporate prayer. What about your church choir or worship team? Will they have to be scaled down and forced to distance themselves from one another? Or will singing be allowed at all? What about communion? In most churches the communion elements are personally handled, even by others before you receive them. And, what about that bastion of church unity, the potluck or pot blessing? Is that now going to be scuttled into the dust bin of time? How can churches survive without their potluck dinners? What about bingo? Say it ain’t so, Aunt Sally! Will money now be designated by the state as “filthy lucre” and therefore be forbidden in the collection plate? Will churches succumb to being state run?

If churches and their leaders, both singularly and corporately, do not take a firm, whatever the consequences stance now, church as it was designed to be by Christ and as it should be, will disappear. We Christians will have no one to blame but our feeble selves.

Mask or not to Mask. If you feel more comfortable and safe wearing a mask, you go right ahead. But please, do not wear one when you are driving a vehicle or operating machinery of any kind. You could cause an accident, injure yourself or even die—yes, die. Look it up! Hundreds of medical professionals and researchers are finally coming forth with the truth. MASKS DO NOT WORK! They will not prevent you from getting COVID-19 or many other viruses. Members of Congress do not fully believe so. Many seem only to wear masks when they are in front of a camera, and then usually wear them incorrectly. They apparently are useless for felons since thousands of them are being sprung on U.S. citizens so they do not get the virus. Wake up folks. This is all a game and the American citizen is being shut out by a score of scads to nothing (zippo, nada, zero).

“Social Distancing,” the New 21st Century Self-Imprisonment. One way to destroy a society is to require that individuals distance, that is, disengage themselves from other people. It is not only demoralizing, but for some it can be extremely depressing and life threatening. Think about it. How many of our beloved seniors and younger, that have died (whether from COVID or something else) have died without family members at their side in the last 2-3 months? When has this ever happened in America? When has this ever been tolerated in America? NEVER! Will you allow it to happen again? Will you allow your mother, father, spouse, child to die alone? What about you? Would you want to die alone? The “powers to be” are shattering American society and far too many people are cheering them on. Socialization, whether at church, work, business, restaurants with family, friends or co-workers is the social fabric of America. It always has been, but will it always be? Only you can prevent it from disappearing from your life.

Destroying the Food Chain. Briefly. Destroy a nation’s food chain and resources and you can have the people on their knees begging for crumbs. It is outrageous, and sinful, that farmers all across the country have been forced to euthanize millions of hogs, chickens, cattle and other livestock because their processors were forced to shut down. In addition, farmers in southern states and out West were forced to plow under crops ready for harvest; dairymen had to dump millions of gallons of milk because they had no outlets. For the very first time in my eight decades on this good earth, I found meat departments empty or nearly so. Eggs not available. Chicken, an almost every day staple for many, scarce. In America? Can’t happen, you say. But wait, the worst is yet to come, say the “experts.” And they are likely correct.

Beholden to the Government. Most Americans, so distant from the reality of the United States Constitution, appear to applaud the government as their savior and prostrate themselves over every little crumb the Burgermeisters deem them worthy of receiving. This “crisis” is just one more giant step, not for mankind, but toward governmental serfdom and total dependence on a small select group of uncivil servants of the public. Just look at how simple and fast they got the American citizen, who is “guaranteed” unrestricted freedom and liberty, to completely shut down their daily lives and voluntarily accept near abject poverty, all for the “common good.” Within a scant two months, over 35 million formerly gainfully employed Americans were told to go home and stay there until “Big Brother” said it was okay for them to stick their heads out in public.

It was so easy, so quick and Americans were so compliant. Just imagine what we will be asked to give up next time and for how long. The stage is already being set for a “do over” in the fall or winter, just in case the unemployment starts to rebound.

Well, this is getting pretty long and there could be no end in sight if I continue. But think of everyday things you and I take for granted and how state and federal government are forcing changes you and I are not likely to embrace, in addition to those already addressed. What about our educational system? How will it be affected? Some primary schools are already discussing the continuance of “distance learning.” Some colleges and universities are talking about the possibility of not re-opening their campuses until 2022. And, my pet peeve: Many stores and shops used to have chairs or benches inside or outside for the weary traveler to rest an aching back or tired feet. Now, they have disappeared or made inaccessible. Are you kidding me! If you do not want to sit by me because you think I might give you the “plague,” fine, don’t. I enjoy solitude too. But why deny me a place to rest my weary body? This is just one of countless absurdities that is ruffling my feathers. But I’m sure you would have your list too if you would just take a minute to reflect. And don’t get me going on sport activities at all levels. Has that been destroyed too?

The “New Normal.” Almost from day one of the pandemic we have been assaulted with rhetoric, largely from politicians on the left, that there will be no going back to a normal life in America, but we will enter into a “new normal,” whatever that is. Are you comfortable with this new politically-defined life for you and your offspring? I, for one, am very disturbed and greatly irritated by this. You should be too. In case you have not noticed, your constitutional rights are being systematically stripped away one by one and far too many clueless Americans seem so very happy to have it happen as long as they perceive that they are safer now.

Who stands to benefit from this disaster? One group, I assure you, that will not benefit, and that is the American people. The democratic socialist Marxists, however, are squealing with glee. They have never had a greater opportunity to so easily pursue and implement their anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-constitution agenda. This is THEE “never let a good crisis go to waste” crisis that they could not have fully imagined, yet have fully taken advantage. All that “stimulus” money to help the “po folk” was an illusion to permit them to load up with financial pork for their favorite cronies, abortion clinics and their ilk. All the while gleefully putting the American taxpayer on the hook for trillions more in unaffordable U.S. debt. How nice of them. A key objective, despite the immense pain for American households, was one last ditch effort to destroy the “Trump Economy.” Russia-gate did not do it. Ukraine-gate was a failure. Impeachment was a disaster. What’s left that could so utterly and rapidly destroy President Trump’s hallmark and re-election hopes? Need I explain further?

And, I have not even touched on the likely horrendous financial impact on Americans and America. However, if you have the fortitude, you could read the article linked below.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

God’s Judgment in One Hour

Revelation 18 and the fate of America

(Excerpted from Revelation 18 and the fate of America.)

Therefore her plagues will come in one day—death and mourning and famine. And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her. . . .

. . . standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.’

Revelation 18:8, 10

In Revelation 18 it is stated that Babylon’s judgment will come swiftly—“in one hour”—and is mentioned twice in verses 8, 10 and 17. But is that possible in this day and age? The simple, direct answer is, yes, but first let us take a look at America’s financial foundation and the financial stability of the world before reaching any conclusions.

United States of America’s National Debt. On October 18, 2013 America’s National Debt was rapidly advancing past $17 trillion or 107 percent of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). To gain a perspective on the significance of America’s debt one should look at the history of America’s indebtedness as well as compare the current national debt to that of some other countries.

At the end of 1929 America had just suffered a major financial collapse. The national debt was a mere (by today’s standards) $17 billion or 16 percent of GDP. By the end of 1933 and with advent of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “New Deal” Great Depression recovery plan, the United States was $23 billion in debt or 40 percent of GDP. At the end of 1941 and just after the country entered into World War II against both Germany (and the Axis powers) and Japan, the national debt stood at a manageable $49 billion or 39 percent of GDP.

The same prudence which in private life would forbid our paying our own money for  unexplained projects, forbids it in the dispensation of the public moneys. Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Shelton Gilliam, June 19, 1808

When World War II ended in 1945 at a cost of $296 billion for the United States, by the end of 1946 America’s national debt had soared to $269 billion and a historical high of 121 percent of GDP. During the post-war recovery the debt remained relatively stable from 1946 to 1960, ranging from $252 billion in 1946 to $286 billion in 1960. During the same period the debt to GDP ratio steadily declined from 121 percent to 54 percent. During the decades of the 1960s and 1970s the debt grew steadily, but the GDP growth rate exceeded the debt growth rate so that the debt to GDP ratio dropped further to a post-World War II low of 31 percent by the end of 1981 but just before the recession of 1982 hit.

We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1816.

Just before the start of Ronald Reagan’s first presidential term, the national debt had risen to just under one trillion dollars—$908 billion or 33 percent of GDP by the end of 1980. During the Reagan presidency of two terms the national debt more than doubled to $2.6 trillion or 51 percent of GDP by the end of 1988.

During the two presidential terms of William Clinton the debt grew modestly from $4.4 trillion to $5.674 trillion while the debt to GDP ratio fell from 66 percent to 57 percent. From 2001 to the end of 2008 (the George W. Bush presidential years) the debt climbed significantly to a little over $10 trillion or 70 percent of GDP. Although this increase in indebtedness was dramatic, America was about to become shell-shocked.

With the election of Barack Hussein Obama in 2008 as the country’s president, America would witness the reality of a big-spending government behemoth like never before. By July 4, 2013, less than six months into his second presidential term, President Obama has overseen the growth of the country’s debt to $16.9 trillion or 107 percent of GDP. By the end of his second term (if the taxpayers allow him to get there), the national debt could well exceed $20 trillion. If so, he will have accumulated more debt than all 43 presidents before him and the United States will be on the verge of financial ruin (if not before then).

Everett Dirksen, the former Republican who represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. Senate from 1951 until his death in 1969, when reflecting on the national debt in 1965 (which was $317 billion), told this humorous story, which he labeled “cat in the well”:

One time in the House of Representatives (a colleague) told me a story about a proposition that a teacher put to a boy. He said, ‘Johnny, a cat fell in a well 100 feet deep. Suppose that cat climbed up 1 foot and then fell back 2 feet. How long would it take the cat to get out of the well?’

Johnny worked assiduously with his slate and slate pencil for quite a while, and then when the teacher came down and said, ‘How are you getting along?’

Johnny said, ‘Teacher, if you give me another slate and a couple of slate pencils, I am pretty sure that in the next 30 minutes I can land that cat in hell.’

If some people get any cheer out of a $328 billion debt ceiling, I do not find much to cheer about concerning it. (Congressional Record, June 16, 1965, p. 13884).

In the world of American politics and financial mismanagement, the way to deal with the ever skyrocketing debt is not to restrain spending but just to raise the level of the amount one is allowed to spend. A similar philosophy followed by the American taxpayer would soon land them in prison.

Debt to GDP Ratios Around the World. The one most commonly used measure of a country’s economic health is the Public Debt to GDP (Gross Domestic Product) ratio or percent of public debt a country owes compared to their GDP. Public Debt is the amount of money the federal government owes itself and other creditors.

With America’s debt to GDP ratio at 107 percent and rising daily, how does the country measure up to other developed countries, as well as third world or undeveloped countries? Global Finance reported on the Public Debt to GDP projections for 2014 for OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries. The OECD includes just about every developed and developing country in the world. The debt to GDP for all OECD countries is projected to be 113 percent.

The worst country by far is Japan at 246 percent. Japan is followed by the European Union countries of Greece (200%), Portugal (135%), Italy (131%), Ireland (128%), United Kingdom (114%), France (110%) and Spain (105%). All of these Euro countries are in significant financial trouble and turmoil. The United States is projected to be at 114 percent debt to GDP, the same as the UK.

Other European Union countries, such as, Switzerland (39%), Germany (85%), Sweden (47%), Norway (43%), Finland (54%), Denmark (48%) and the Netherlands (72%) are looking much better.

By comparison, how do some of our non-European allies and adversaries look financially? Of the United States’ clear allies, Canada appears to be in the worst shape but still healthier than the U.S. Canada’s projected 2014 debt to GDP is 86 percent. Australia, a long term U.S. ally, on the other hand, is far healthier with only a 28 percent debt to GDP. However, two of America’s long term antagonists and adversaries are also very healthy financially. China has a 2014 projected meager debt to GDP of only 17.3 percent and its neighbor to the north, Russia, at merely 10.8 percent. Ironically, the United States has not been near that level of debt to GDP since the financial crash of 1929 when debt to GDP was at 16 percent.

Clearly, the majority of America’s long-standing allies in Europe are battling tremendous financial pressure, while its two largest and most bellicose decades-long enemies are financially strong and in a much better position to threaten the United States at every level of diplomacy or future military confrontation.

I wish it were possible to obtain a single amendment to our Constitution. I would be willing to  depend on that alone for their reduction of the administration of our government to the genuine  principles of its Constitution; I mean an additional article, taking from the federal government  the power of borrowing. Thomas Jefferson. Source: letter to John Taylor, November 26, 1798

Even Mexico is fairing far better than its northern neighbor with a debt to GDP of 43 percent. In South America, even Venezuela with a ravaged economy for over a decade has a debt to GDP of 62 percent. South America as a whole is looking relatively strong compared to the U.S. when using the 2014 projected debt to GDP index. Brazil (59%), Argentina (42.5%), Bolivia (32.6%), Columbia (30%), Peru (17.6%), Chile (12.6%) and Paraguay (11.8%) are projected to hold on to healthy debt to GDP ratios. Even tiny Ecuador—the size of the state of Nevada—is very healthy with an 18 percent debt to GDP.

When it comes to Islamic countries that include current or potential enemies of the United States, the majority are financially healthy, at least when measuring debt to GDP. Egypt is one of the worst but far lower than the U.S. with a debt to GDP at 78.5 percent. Egypt is followed by Pakistan (61.6%), Turkey (36%), Indonesia (21%), Iraq (20%), Nigeria (16%), Iran (8%) and Saudi Arabia (5.2%).

America’s Total Indebtedness. America’s national debt is only a hairline crack in the window of indebtedness and overall view of the financial problem for the United States. Although the national debt seems insurmountable in terms of ever being paid off or even reduced ever again, the real financial issues defy comprehension.

The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but  swindling futurity on a large scale.  Thomas Jefferson, letter to John Taylor, May 28, 1816.

The total debt (total debt of households, businesses, state and local governments, financial institutions and the federal government) of the United States of America was estimated to be $59.577 trillion on July 4, 2013, the 237th anniversary of the country’s Declaration of Independence. As bad as the total debt sounds and looks, it is the obligation of the United States government for Unfunded Liabilities—present and future—that is truly mind-boggling. On Independence Day, 2013, the American government’s “promise to pay” but unfunded liabilities for Social Security ($16.438 trillion), Prescription Drug ($21.748 trillion) and Medicare ($86.490 trillion) was at a hefty $124.677 trillion or $1,094,701 per taxpayer. To add to this financial debacle and impossible to mitigate financial debt heap, we will be adding another financial behemoth of government largesse and theft of taxpayer monies, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare” that will further plunge the country into that ever downward spiraling cesspool of public debt.

George Washington, the first president of the United States of America foresaw the danger of the federal government taking on too much debt without a quick resolution and commitment to repaying it. In his address to the House of Representatives on December 3, 1793, he stated: “No pecuniary consideration is more urgent, than the regular redemption and discharge of the public debt: on none can delay be more injurious, or an economy of time more valuable.”

In a letter to John Taylor on November 26, 1798, Founding Father and third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, also expressed concern about the federal government’s uncontrolled ability to borrow money. “I wish it were possible to obtain a single amendment to our Constitution” Jefferson wrote. “I would be willing to depend on that alone for their reduction of the administration of our government to the genuine principles of its Constitution; I mean an additional article, taking from the federal government the power of borrowing.”

Washington and Jefferson, as well as the rest of the Founding Fathers, would be aghast at what has transpired so recklessly at the hands of unrestrained politicians and presidential leaders during the “modern era.” They would likely waffle between absolute disbelief and their restraint from saying: We told you this would happen.

The Harbinger of Financial Catastrophe: Debt to Government Revenue.   As interesting and informative as the Public Debt to GDP ratio is in helping to get a financial picture of a country, other financial experts argue that it is an inaccurate and perhaps misleading measure of a country’s true economic health. Among them, investment banking firm, Morgan Stanley, advocate the use of the Debt to Government Revenue ratio, that is, the government’s ability to pay its debt from its annual revenue or tax receipts. On that basis the outcome for the United States is quite sobering if not downright petrifying.

Federal Budget: The multiplication of public offices, increase of expense beyond income, growth and entailment of a public debt, are indications soliciting the employment of the pruning knife. Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Spencer Roane, March 9, 1821.

Ever since the real estate and financial crisis of 2008 (and beyond), the news fluttering out of the Eurozone countries has not painted a pretty financial picture. The headlines and newscasters worldwide have reported almost daily on the financial gloom that had descended upon countries like Ireland, Greece, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Greece, which perhaps has been in the financial headlines the most frequently, suffered from a debt to revenue ratio of 351% in 2012. It was followed by Ireland (340%), Portugal (302%), United Kingdom (212%) and Germany (181%). The Scandinavian countries of Denmark (82%), Finland (99%) and Sweden (75%) had the lowest debt to revenue ratios.

So, how does the (once) great United States of America compare? On Independence Day, 2013, debt to revenue ratio for the U.S. stood at a whopping 656 percent (you read it right). At the end of President Ronald Reagan’s second presidential term in 1988, the ratio was an unimpressive, but much lower 260 percent. When President Barack Obama took office just after the end of 2008, the ratio was 397 percent.

As bad as the financial picture continued to look for the Eurozone countries, the average revenue to total GDP ratio for all 27 countries was a respectable 40 percent. By contrast, on July 4, 2013, the revenue to GDP of the United States was a mere 16.3 percent.

The Derivative Financial Volcano. Men around the globe in general and Americans in particular, in their greedy quest for wealth and more wealth, have been led and known to do some very foolish things. It was greed that led, in part, to the “Crash of ‘29” and the ensuing “Great Depression”. It was greed that led to the real estate and banking collapse in 2008. The only question is not if another financial collapse will come, but how soon?

In the Bible there is a stark warning to all those who make money their god. In his first letter to his disciple, Timothy, the Apostle Paul wrote: “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition” (1 Timothy 6:9; author’s emphasis). Paul knew human nature and that the temptation to be rich was more than most men could deny. “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil,” Paul continued, “for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” (verse 10; author’s emphasis).

It is not money that destroys men’s lives—we all need a form of money to live—it is the love of money that draws men to do all kinds of evil. “But you, O man of God,” Paul warned, “flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11).

Because of modern man’s lust for money and more and more of it, there is one foolish financial move over the decades that could come back to haunt him and financially destroy the big and small fortunes of millions of people and the hopes and dreams of current and future generations for years to come.

So, what exactly is a derivative? They were at the center of the 2008 real estate and banking collapse. A derivative is a type of options contract—a gamble that some underlying investment will go up or down in the future. Derivatives are largely “imaginary” investments with little or no intrinsic value. In essence, rather than a true tangible investment, they represent more of a “crap-shoot”—a horrific gamble by men driven by an insatiable appetite for wealth and more of it. The future impact, when the derivative market unravels, will be catastrophic and unfathomable.

Steve Denning, in an article for Forbes, in an explanation for the financial collapse of 2008, wrote “the warning signs were everywhere: too much borrowing, foolish investments, greedy banks, regulators asleep at the wheel, politicians eager to promote home-ownership for those who couldn’t afford it, and distinguished analysts openly predicting this could only end badly.

The worldwide derivative estimate: $600 trillion to $1.5 quadrillion (that is $1,500 trillion or 1.5  followed by 15 zeroes). At the upper estimate, the financial risk is 20 times the entire global  GDP, which was estimated to be around $75 trillion in 2012.

[UPDATE: According to the Bank of International Settlements (BIS), as of March 1, 2020, the Global exposure of the world’s nations to derivatives was $640.44 Trillion or 7x the world GDP of $90.52 Trillion (Statistics Times, February 20, 2020). On April 1, 2019, Wall Street on Parade    reported that just five of America’s mega banks held $201.2 Trillion in notional (face value) derivative exposure. They are: JP Morgan Chase ($48.2 T), Citigroup ($47 T), Bank of America ($31.7 T), Goldman Sachs Bank USA ($42.3 T) and Morgan Stanley ($32 T).]

“. . . The root cause wasn’t just the reckless lending and the excessive risk taking,” Denning explained. “The problem at the core was a lack of transparency” [among financial institutions].

The worldwide exposure to derivatives is anyone’s guess. Estimates range from $600 trillion to $1.5 quadrillion (that is $1,500 trillion or 1.5 followed by 15 zeroes). At the upper estimate, the financial risk is 20 times the entire global GDP, which was estimated to be around $75 trillion in 2012. No one really knows what the world financial markets exposure is to these worthless financial “investments”.

The Current Problem: Many financial analysts and financial writers like Denning are warning that the next financial crisis, which they see as imminent, will make the burst of the financial bubble of 2008 look like a blip on the financial radar screen.

Denning points out that one financial institution alone, JPMorgan, at the end of the third quarter of 2012, had a “notional” (that is, “imaginary” or “speculative”) exposure to derivatives of $72 trillion or about five times the world economy at that time. According to the United States Controller of the Currency office, at the end of 2012, American banks held an astounding $223 trillion in “notional” derivatives with only four of the nation’s largest banks holding 93 percent of the total.

The Flash Crash and Electronic Meltdown—In One Hour. So, is it possible, in this day and age, for America’s financial system and that of the world to collapse in one hour? Absolutely! Not only in one hour, but perhaps in a matter of seconds. With absolutely everything tied together by computer systems, electricity and electronics it would not take much to create havoc with a nation’s or the world’s financial system and life in general.

On July 29, 2013 a panel of experts convened in Washington, DC to consider the level of the threat on the U.S. infrastructure via an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack, whether naturally occurring or via terrorists or a nation-state. The panel included R. James Woolsey, former Director of Central Intelligence under President Bill Clinton; former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich; Ambassador Henry Cooper, former Director of the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization under President George H. W. Bush and Dr. Peter Vincent Pry who served on the Congressional EMP Threat Commission.

They assessed America’s vulnerability to a natural or enemy attack by means of an electromagnetic pulse coming from the sun or a nuclear device. They concluded that the U.S. is extremely susceptible to EMP disruptions whether natural or from a lone terrorist or a rogue government.

On a smaller, local scale, many people have had the experience of a temporary interruption in electrical power or use of electronic devices due to a powerful thunder (electrical) storm. On a grander scale, such interruptions can be caused by the electromagnetic pulses sent from the sun as a result of solar flares or solar storms. Such natural EMP events can be regional or wide spread; can be minor inconveniences or devastating.

Mr. Woolsey pointed out that an EMP event originating from the sun struck the electrical grid in Quebec, Canada on March 13, 1989. The solar geomagnetic storm resulted in the blackout of eastern Canada and billions of dollars in economic losses. Within two minutes the entire Quebec power grid was shut down and millions thrown into darkness and winter cold. Schools, businesses and transportation hubs were closed. The impact affected some northeastern U.S. power grids as well. The energy released during the event was estimated to be like thousands of nuclear bombs exploding. The geomagnetic storm that it created resulted in spectacular “northern lights” being seen as far south as Florida and Cuba. Over 200 power grids from coast to coast in the United States experienced disruptions.   Even some satellites were affected, tumbling out of control for several hours.

Although such solar geomagnetic events are relatively rare, Mr. Woolsey warned that if the Quebec event had occurred on the east coast of the U.S., 20-40 million Americans might have been thrown into darkness for up to two years.

The most recent mega solar storm occurred on August 28 through September 2, 1859 and is known as the “Carrington Event” after amateur British astrologer, Richard Carrington. On the morning of September 1, on his estate just outside London, Carrington observed “two patches of intensely bright and white light” erupting from the sunspots. Within hours, the powerful geomagnetic pulses produced impacted the entire earth, damaging telegraph machines and disrupting communications worldwide.

Around the entire globe bright, colorful auroras of light exploded like 10 billion nuclear bombs. Although in some parts of the world it was still the middle of the night, the light display was so bright that men were going to work thinking it was daylight. Although the initial impact was felt three days earlier, the biggest impact occurred on September 1-2.

The South Carolina newspaper, Charleston Mercury, recorded the observation of a woman on Sullivan’s Island, just east of Charleston Harbor. “The eastern sky appeared of a blood red color. It seemed brightest exactly in the east, as though the full moon, or rather the sun, were about to rise. It extended almost to the zenith. The whole island was illuminated. The sea reflected the phenomenon, and no one could look at it without thinking of the passage in the Bible which says, ‘the sea was turned to blood.’ The shells on the beach, reflecting light, resembled coals of fire.”

If such a solar event of the Carrington magnitude happened today, it would destroy electrical grids and critical life-supporting infrastructures worldwide and put the lives of billions of people in peril.

What would people do without electricity for months or even years; no computers; no cell phones or other communication devices; no transportation (due to vehicle computer systems shut down); no refrigeration; no heat; nothing that mankind depends on for daily life working. It would be catastrophic and many would suffer and die, but not before their fortunes and life savings were wiped out.

According to the Center for Security Policy, scientists believe that the earth is overdue for such a geomagnetic incident on the scale of the Carrington Event. Ambassador Cooper believes, that because of America’s unpreparedness, a solar event like Carrington or a terrorist EMP attack would be devastating and as many as 285 million or 90 percent of the U.S. population would perish due to disease, starvation or the collapse of society. Cooper also remarked that the earth narrowly missed a solar EMP in mid-July, 2013 when a mammoth Carrington-type solar emission of ionized gas crossed the planet’s orbit.

While preventing a solar EMP event is impossible, the panel expressed grave concern that an EMP attack from terrorists or a rogue state could be imminent. Dr. Pry warned that there have been a disturbing high number of cyber attacks on U.S. computer systems (government. military and infrastructure) with viruses and hacking, that are probing America’s critical systems and looking for weaknesses. In addition, Dr. Pry noted, that the military doctrines of four of America’s enemies (China, Iran, North Korea and Russia) include EMP attack plans.

To emphasize his point, Dr. Pry pointed out that in the early morning hours of April 16, 2013 the San Jose (California) PG&E experienced a sabotage attack when cables were cut and transformers were shot at, causing significant damage. In “connecting the dots” of cyber attacks, sabotage and the recent discovery of a North Korean freighter in the Caribbean carrying nuclear capable missiles, Dr. Pry warned that the U.S. is extremely vulnerable and a defense of the nation’s power grid should be of utmost importance.

Woolsey noted that a single EMP attack from a nuclear device detonated at high altitude over the U.S. would destroy America’s electrical grid, as well as critical infrastructure and put millions of lives at risk. America’s power utilities, Woolsey stated, are ill prepared to protect themselves against such an attack. To complicate matters, the U.S. has no ballistic missile early warning (BMEW) systems facing south, thus making the country extremely susceptible to any attack from the south.

For in one hour your judgment has come.  Revelation 18:10

Update: As of March 19, 2020, derivative exposure has risen to $673 Trillion. U.S. National Debt is approaching $23.6 Trillion and Unfunded Liabilities nearly $132 Trillion, a liability of $408,000 per U.S. citizen. U.S. Federal Budget Deficit has mushroomed to over $1.6 Trillion (with the Federal response and cost of COVID-19, this deficit is likely to climb.

“In today’s ever charged torrent of religious and political unrest, it is becoming increasingly vital for the people of the world to understand the truth of both the religious and the geopolitical nature of Islam. The heart, purpose and vision of the Islamic system governed by a complete way of life known as Shari’ah is dangerously misunderstood and highly underestimated by the West. It has been that way for 1400 years, numbing the minds of people like a shot of Novocain before treating an abscessed tooth. This compendium, ‘Understanding Islam in the Light of Christianity’ by Dr. James Gauss, is a vital and valuable resource that will be called upon again and again. If you are a pastor, spiritual leader, governmental leader, business leader or simply a curious person with a sincere desire to understand the heart of both Islam and Christianity, get this book.”

Muslims are not Descendants of Abraham

The Muslim Claim to Fame. Although Arabic Muslims claim Abraham as their heir, biblically they are descendants of pre-covenant Abram, the one who disobeyed God and disbelieved His promise of an heir through Sarah. God could bless Ishmael, but He could never establish His covenant with a sinful seed of the flesh.

Ishmael became the father of 12 Arabian princes (nations) whom God said that He would “multiply . . . exceedingly” (Genesis 17:20). Ishmael and Hagar were driven into the Wilderness of Paran to dwell (Genesis 21:20-21). This wilderness covers the eastern Sinai and the southern and southeastern borders of present-day Israel.

Ishmael’s sons initially inhabited an area from Egypt and the Sinai Desert, the Arabian peninsula to Assyria (which includes present day Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Syria and the lesser Arab kingdoms). Remember, God said that Ishmael and his descendants would be wild men whose hand would be “against every man.”

If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise (Galatians 3:29).

According to the Apostle Paul, in the above scripture, other than being an Israelite, the only way one can be an heir of Abraham in through faith in Jesus Christ.

Some Bible translations of Genesis 25:18 state that the descendants of Ishmael “lived in hostility toward” or “in defiance of” all their brethren (New International Version, New Living Translation and North American Standard). Other versions (including the King James, New King James and Amplified Bibles) state only that Ishmael’s descendants lived “close to” or “in the presence of” their relatives.

Over 25 centuries later, Muhammad and his followers have found a simple solution to this dilemma of a negative biblical image and how to expropriate God’s promise and covenant with the Jewish people. Muhammad simply revealed that Allah told him that it was Ishmael, not Isaac, that Allah chose to test Abraham’s faith; and therefore it was Ishmael and all those who are descendants of him that are the true chosen people to fulfill Allah’s covenant.

Remember, in Genesis 22:2, God called Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac on a makeshift altar on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem.   However, Muhammad ignored that biblical reality and declared that Allah called Abraham to sacrifice Ishmael on Mount Mina outside Mecca. It was that simple to change historical truth and create an alternate reality that Muslims have believed for 14 centuries.

According to the Qur’an, Abraham prayed to Allah: “‘My Lord! Grant me [a son who shall be] of the doers of good deeds [that is, righteous].’ So We gave [Abraham] the good news of a boy, possessing forbearance. And when [Ishmael] attained to working with him, [Abraham] said: O my son! Surely I have seen in a dream that I should sacrifice you; consider then what you see.

“He said: O my father! Do what you are commanded; if Allah please, you will find me of the patient ones. So when they both submitted and [Abraham] threw [Ishmael] down upon his forehead, and We called out to him saying: O Ibrahim! You have indeed shown the truth of the vision; surely thus do We reward the doers of good: Most surely this is a manifest trial” (surah 37:100- 106). More information on Islam as a non-Abrahamic faith occurs in the following chapter.

God did not Recognize Ishmael as Abraham’s Son. The preceding version in the Qur’an of Abraham’s call to sacrifice his son strongly contradicts the biblical story. “Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about’” (Genesis 22:2; author’s emphasis). Notice that God refers to Isaac as Abraham’s only son. That is because only Isaac was God’s choice to fulfill His covenant with Abraham—not Ishmael, the son of the flesh.

In Genesis 22, God told Abraham three times that he (Abraham) only had one son, Isaac. “Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you’” (Genesis 22:2).

Again, after Abraham followed God’s call to sacrifice his only son, God intervened when he saw Abraham’s faithfulness. “And He said, ‘Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me” (Genesis 22:12, NKJV, author’s emphasis). Once again, “Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, and said: ‘By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son’” (Genesis 22:15-16, NKJV, author’s emphasis).

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, “In Isaac your seed shall be called,” (Hebrews 11:17-18).

In the Genesis account, Isaac had no prior knowledge of his role in the sacrifice.    “But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, ‘My Father!’

“And he said, ‘Here I am, my son.’

“Then he said, ‘Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?’

“And Abraham said, ‘My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering’” (Genesis 22:7-8a).

Because of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his only son and not withhold him from God, God promised Abraham that “through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me” (Genesis 22:18).

From the present day and historical perspective of the daily violence against mankind by the followers of Islam, it is hard to see that this was God’s plan for blessing the nations of the earth through the descendants of Ishmael. Among the descendants of Isaac, however, was Jesus, the sacrificial lamb who brought salvation to the world by the shedding of His blood and not that of another human being—truly a blessing to all who will receive Him.

The Apostle Paul affirmed that descendants of Isaac are the true heirs of God. “It is not as though God’s word had failed,” he asserted. “For not all who are descended from Israel are [of] Israel. Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, ‘It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned’ [Genesis 21:12]. In other words, it is not the natural children who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring” (Romans 9:6-8, NIV).

In his letter to the Galatians, Paul reasserted the striking difference between the seed of the pre-covenant Ishmael and the covenant-fulfilling seed of Isaac. He made both historical and spiritual comparisons.

For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman [or slave], the other by a freewoman [Genesis 16:15].

But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, which things are symbolic.

For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar – for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children – but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all. . . .

But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.

Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman” (Galatians 4:22-26, 29, 30).

Paul makes it clear that Ishmael was the pre-covenant seed of a slave and therefore could not represent God’s covenant with His people. Isaac, on the other hand, was a freeman, born of a freewoman as the fulfillment of God’s promise to His people. Those who are heirs to the bondswoman of the flesh (viz., Ishmael), will remain in bondage until set free by the salvation of Christ, who is heir to the covenant of the freeman, Isaac.

In the preceding letter to the Galatians, Paul also pointed out that the descendants of Ishmael will always be persecuting the descendants of Isaac, the freeman, and that the heirs of the two can never share in the inheritance of the freeman. The only hope of sharing this inheritance that the descendants of Ishmael have is to be grafted in through the salvation of Christ.

Despite the clarity from both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible and testimony from God’s own mouth, Muslims, some Christian leaders and other ignorant or uninformed individuals continue to claim that Muslims—or at least Arabic Muslims—are descendants of Abraham, therefore, Islam can lay claim to being an “Abrahamic faith.” Muslims also claim that the Old Testament prophets, the Apostles and Jesus Himself were Muslims.

It is important to recognize, from an Islamic viewpoint, it was necessary for the god of Islam to supplant Isaac with Ishmael as the one God called Abraham to sacrifice. Why? Because it was through Isaac’s lineage that Jesus the Messiah would be born (Hadian, Shahram. The Trojan Horse of Interfaith Dialogue Between Christians and Muslims, Speech, November 27, 2018).

Do Judeo-Christian Faiths Have Any Common Ground With Islam?

January 18, 2020

James F. Gauss

There is not, nor can there ever be, any “common ground” between Islam and the Judeo-Christian faiths.

For Christian leaders and Christians to accept common ground or a common word with Muslims,

• they must accept that Muhammad was a prophet of God Almighty;
• that Muhammad was superior to Christ;
• that Jesus did not have a divine nature;
• that Miriam, Moses’ and Aaron’s sister gave birth to Jesus, because that is what Allah revealed;
• that Jesus was not part of God’s plan for mankind;
• that there is no salvation through Jesus Christ;
• that Allah is just another name for the One and Only True God of the Bible;
• that God, through Muhammad, reversed His plan of Salvation through Jesus Christ;
• that Jesus is not Lord and Savior, or the Son of God;
• that God’s love is conditional (because Allah’s love is);
• that God hates the sinner, but loves the sin;
• that it is God that causes one to sin;
• that God desires to send all people to hell, because Allah does;
• believe the lie that Muslims are commanded to “love their neighbors” (it does not exist in the Qur’an or teachings of Muhammad);
• that Jesus was not crucified or raised from the dead in the resurrection;
• that we achieve God’s favor through our works and not by faith;
• that there is no assurance of salvation;
• that heaven is a place of personal gratification and perversion;
• that the Holy Spirit does not exist or play a role in the life of a Christian;
• and many other Biblical truths would have to be rejected.

Jesus said that in the End Times “. . . false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24). Apparently, we are in those times, because more and more Christian leaders and their followers are being deceived by the wiles of the devil.

The Apostle Paul, in his second letter to the church of the Thessalonians, wrote, “and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness” (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12).

Many leaders in the Christian church as well as in Christian colleges, universities and seminaries are being deceived by the evil one. In their desire to see harmony between Christians, Jews and Muslims, they are casting aside foundational principles and teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Although Jesus called His followers to love all people, He did not call them to cast aside wisdom, understanding and discernment of the devil’s tactics, nor to make an alliance with evil. By making alliances with Muslims, Christians are choosing to embrace an anti-Christ ideology that seeks to lead people away from the truth of the Gospel of Christ and His saving work on the cross. Instead of preaching the truth to Muslims, they seek to find non-existent “common ground” that perverts the true word of God and condone the devil’s alternate and false gospel.

Paul also wrote to his protégé, Timothy, warning him about deceiving spirits in the End Times. “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron” (1 Timothy 4:1-2). Unfortunately, too many Christian leaders, in an effort to be more in line with the world and to be politically correct, are abandoning the teachings and doctrines of the Christian faith and are succumbing to deceiving spirits and the doctrines of demons.

In an attempt to bring peace between Muslims and the Judeo-Christian world, there is a desperate move to acquiesce to the satanic faith of Islam. This will not bear forth good fruit, but only more deception and weakening of the Christian faith.

“Do not be deceived,” the Apostle Paul wrote, “God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7).
