God’s Warning through Jeremiah, a Word for the U.S.?

June 14, 2020

James F. Gauss

Excerpted, in part, from Revelation 18 and the Fate of America.

Rev 18

In 627 B.C., thirty years before the reign of Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, God raised up Jeremiah, another powerful prophet of warning. Because Jeremiah was constantly telling the kings and people of Judah of their impending doom if they did not turn back to God, he was not a very popular prophet and his life was threatened many times. He spoke God’s word during the reign of five kings of Judah: Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin and Zedekiah. Of the five, only Josiah (640-609 B.C.) followed the dictates of God’s heart.

Toward the beginning of Jeremiah’s ministry, God reminded Judah of their heritage and how they had profaned it. “I brought you into a bountiful country, to eat its fruit and its goodness. But when you entered, you defiled My land and made My heritage an abomination.  The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’ And those who handle the law did not know Me; the rulers also transgressed against Me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit” (Jeremiah 2:7-8).

“‘Your own wickedness will correct you’, God decreed through Jeremiah. “‘And your backslidings will rebuke you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing that you have forsaken the Lord your God, and the fear of Me is not in you,’ says the Lord God of hosts” (Jeremiah 2:19).

God told Jeremiah that life for the people of Judah was going to get so bad that he did not want Jeremiah to get married or raise children (Jeremiah 16:1-2).

“And it shall be, when you show this people all these words, and they say to you, ‘Why has the Lord pronounced all this great disaster against us? Or what is our iniquity? Or what is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?’  then you shall say to them, ‘Because your fathers have forsaken Me,’ says the Lord; ‘they have walked after other gods and have served them and worshiped them, and have forsaken Me and not kept My law.  And you have done worse than your fathers, for behold, each one follows the dictates of his own evil heart, so that no one listens to Me.  Therefore I will cast you out of this land into a land that you do not know, neither you nor your fathers; and there you shall serve other gods day and night, where I will not show you favor.’ (Jeremiah 16:10-13)

God’s continued warning through Jeremiah.

The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it.  And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will relent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it (Jeremiah 18:7-10).

Nevertheless, the people were determined to go their evil ways. “And they said, ‘That is hopeless! [that is, turning back to God (Jeremiah 18:11)] so we will walk according to our own plans, and we will every one obey the dictates of his evil heart” (Jeremiah 18:12).

Once again, God sent them a harsh warning about their disobedience and turning from Him. “Because My people have forgotten Me,” God spoke through Jeremiah, “they have burned incense to worthless idols. And they have caused themselves to stumble in their ways, from the ancient paths, to walk in pathways and not on a highway, to make their land desolate and a perpetual hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and shake his head.  I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will show them the back and not the face in the day of their calamity.”

Rather than heed God’s repeated forewarnings of disaster ahead, the people hated Jeremiah and persecuted him. Even the priest and chief governor of the house of the Lord, Pashur, was so enraged by Jeremiah’s words that he hit Jeremiah and had him put in stocks. This harsh treatment did not deter Jeremiah and the day after he was released from the stocks he came before Pashur and told him that God no longer called him Pashur (prosperity), but that his name was now Magor-Missabib (fear on every side). Furthermore, God told Jeremiah that Babylon would invade Judah (which it did in 605 and 597 B.C.) and that Pashur and his fellow residents of Judah would be taken captive to Babylon (Jeremiah 20:3-6).

Two years after the beginning of Jeremiah’s ministry, in 625 B.C., Nabopolassar became the first king of a new Babylonian dynasty and Babylon would enter what would be known as her “golden age”. In 612 B.C. Nabopolassar and his army would capture and destroy Nineveh in Assyria (current-day Iraq east of the Tigris River) and by 608 B.C. Assyria would collapse under Babylon’s invasion.

The year before Assyria’s fall, Jehoahaz became the king of Judah, but only reigned three months before Necho, the king of Egypt, invaded Judah and took him prisoner (2 Kings 23:31-33). Necho then took Eliakim, Josiah’s son; changed his name to Jehoiakim and made him king of Judah. Just like Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim was an evil king and submitted to Necho’s stiff tribute of gold and silver, “. . . he [Jehoiakim] taxed the land to give money according to the command of Pharaoh; he exacted the silver and gold from the people of the land, from every one according to his assessment to give it to Pharaoh Necho” (2 Kings 23:35).

Jehoiakim served as Pharaoh’s vassal until 605 B.C. when King Nebuchadnezzar II, son of Nabopolassar, invaded Jerusalem. Nebuchadnezzar then made Jehoiakim his servant king in Judah. Jehoiakim eventually rebelled against the king of Babylon and Nebuchanezzar after paying three years of tribute to the Babylonian king. “And the Lord sent against him raiding bands of Chaldeans, bands of Syrians, bands of Moabites, and bands of the people of Ammon; He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord which He had spoken by His servants the prophets. Surely at the commandment of the Lord this came upon Judah, to remove them from His sight because of the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he had done,” (2 Kings 24:2-3).

Once again, around 598 B.C., Nebuchadnezzar came against Judah, pillaged it and took Jehoiakim, bound in fetters, prisoner to Babylon. Judah replaced Jehoiakim with his 18 year old son (some manuscripts say “eight”), Jehoiachin, who reigned only three months before Nebuchadnezzar had him, his family and his entire court taken prisoner to Babylon (2 Kings 24:8-12). Now Jerusalem and all of Judah was under the control of the king of Babylon.

Although Jeremiah’s ministry was thousands of years ago to Israel, does Israel’s history have a lesson and a warning for the United States? I believe it does. The experience and history of the U.S. and its falling away from God very much parallels that of ancient Israel. America has become a wicked an evil place where evil is good and good is evil. Where the church has been powerless to stop the excising of prayer and the Bible from American education; stop abortion; stop perversion; stop Marxist education of our children; stop the decline of the family, and much more. In fact, instead of standing against the evil of the day, far too many churches have embraced it. To turn things around, Apostle Peter warned that God’s judgment must start with His house, the church (1 Peter 4:17). So be it!

God Cannot Live in the Presence of Sin

June 11, 2020

Excerpted from Revelation 18 and the Fate of America

By James F. Gauss

Rev 18

God, the God of the Bible, cannot and will not co-habit with sin. We cannot come before God without repentance and a contrite heart. No one can call upon God and plead for His mercy without first repenting of his or her wrong-doing. As America’s sins have piled high with a growing repudiation of her sinfulness, God, as He did with His chosen people (the Jewish nation) will have no choice but to turn her over to the consequences of her sins.

Despite the millions of practicing Jews and Christians in America, the United States as a whole has become a nation of idol worshippers who have turned away from the God of the Founding Fathers. Just like the rapid collapse of Israel and Judah, present and future generations will be astonished at the rapid decline of so great a nation that had so much potential under God’s guidance.   However, like the Jews, America “forsook the Lord their God” and “embraced other gods, and worshipped them and served them” (see 1 Kings 9:8-9).

“Oh, that you had heeded My commandments!” Isaiah warned the Jews on behalf of God. “Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea” (Isaiah 48:18).   Many of America’s leaders, both secular and religious, have been boastful and egotistical for some time, refusing to consult God for the right path. They have not only fully rejected God’s ways but they have embraced the sinfulness of the world around them. And, in many cases they have created that very sinfulness with wicked hearts.

Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.

John Adams, letter to John Taylor, April 15, 1814

The leaders and people of America would do well to heed the warnings of the prophet Isaiah to the Jews over 2,700 years ago.

Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, who write misfortune, which they have prescribed to rob the needy of justice, and to take what is right from the poor of My people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless. What will you do in the day of punishment, and in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? And where will you leave your glory?” (Isaiah 10:1-3)

Isaiah warned that because Israel’s sins had caused a great separation between them and God and that they were guilty of shedding innocent blood, that God would be forced to turn His face away from them and not hear their pleas (Isaiah 59:1-3, 6-9). The Jews were so full of sin, Isaiah said, that they no longer knew the way of truth and righteousness. Therefore true peace and justice escaped them. Although they sought the light of understanding to guide them, they were surrounded by nothing but darkness.

Cherish, therefore, the spirit of our people, and keep alive their attention. Do not be too severe upon their errors, but reclaim them by enlightening them. If once they become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress, and Assemblies, Judges, and Governors, shall all become wolves.

Thomas Jefferson

Letter to Edward Carrington, January 16, 1787

From a secular viewpoint, James Madison, the “Father of the Constitution” and fourth president of the United States, understood that, “The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny” (Federalist No. 48, February 1, 1788).   Madison recognized that if the United States ever drifted away from the separation of powers wisely set up in the U.S. Constitution by the Founding Fathers, and became one monolithic governing body without any “checks and balances”, America would descend into tyranny. Unfortunately, that is where America finds itself under past and current political leadership.

Once again, Isaiah lamented what he saw was in Israel’s future if they did not repent. If they did not turn from their wicked ways and seek God’s salvation, then God would turn away from them (Isaiah 64:5-7). “But we are all like an unclean thing,” Isaiah proclaimed, “and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away” (verse 6). Because no one called on God in repentance and appealed to Him for help, Isaiah was constrained to ask God, “Will You restrain Yourself because of these things, O Lord? Will You hold Your peace, and afflict us very severely?” (Isaiah 64:12).

As for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths.

Isaiah 3:12

Are Americans Gullible or Deceived?

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,

But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:7

(I am deliberately leaving out my sources to encourage you to do your own research. It is incumbent upon you to be diligent and wise. If not for yourself, think of the future this COVID-driven hysteria is creating for your children and grandchildren.)

I am a World War II baby, born right after the start of that Great War. I grew up in an era of contagious diseases. Polio and tuberculosis (TB), in particular, were the scourges of the country and there was nothing at the time to stop them. But there was also German (yes, GERMAN) measles, chicken pox, the mumps (all viruses) and the potentially deadly scarlet fever. These were the common plagues of my youth. Just about all my friends and myself contracted the big three—measles, pox and mumps. Admittedly, they could be serious, but usually not life threatening.

For those who came down with polio or TB, they received treatment and often with severe cases of TB, the sufferers were sent to TB sanitariums to help them get better. In some cases, the sick were isolated (quarantined), but the healthy continued life as usual. I vaguely remember being “quarantined” in the hospital for some reason as a young child. I remember being in a room (maybe ward) with other children with the same disease. But my family was not quarantined.

I get it! I understand that COVID-19 can be dangerous, and initially, little was supposedly known about it and its virulence. In the past, there have been far greater disease threats or other perils to the American public, but none of them resulted in a virtual complete shutdown of the American economy and way of life, or the freedom of movement and expression. Why? Why is this so different?

For you Trumpers out there (and I’m still one), I believe President Trump has been doing an Herculean job in trying to keep things together, but I believe he has been outnumbered, bamboozled and grossly misled, as well as outright lied to repeatedly, as have been the American people. Keep this thought in mind from here on: “Let no good crisis go to waste.”

Let’s be clear, “The Virus” did not create the crisis with which we now find ourselves trying to survive. Politicians and wayward health “professionals” did and continue to do. Politicians and medical “advisors” knew early on what we were dealing with, but instead of promoting calm and reason, ratcheted up the hysteria and misinformation on a 24/7 schedule ad nauseam. After three months of infection alerts, data accumulation and two months of “lockdown” the facts illustrate that COVID-19 is no more impactive than the annual flu. Hold on! Before you mask wearers get in an uproar. The “authorities” knew early on that COVID-19 was the biggest threat to the elderly or those with other morbidity issues (heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc). The statistics bear that out. Depending on the sources and states one looks at, the vast majority of deaths that are COVID-related (85-90%) are in those two risk groups. Healthy seniors and healthy children and adults under age 65 are at very low risk for this disease.

Overall, across the country, less than 0.02% of people have confirmed cases, but not necessarily sick from the disease. Of those who actually have symptoms of COVID-19, again, less than 0.02% have died. However, here’s the caveat: the statistics for COVID-19 have been grossly skewed upward from the very beginning to mislead the public and maintain a certain level of panic among the populace. Don’t believe me? Do your own research. Medical professionals on the front line all over the country have been coming forward and testifying that they have been told, coerced or forced to code virtually every death during the COVID scare as a viral death. Check the CDC data for deaths from other causes, like heart attack, cancer, etc. during this period. Particularly, for high COVID-incidence states, like debt riddled and poorly governed New York.

It was recently revealed that in NY, as COVID deaths mounted, deaths from heart disease (down 85%) and cancer (down 87%) dramatically dropped. Hmmmm! How does that happen? People have less heart attacks during one of the most stressful times in the nation’s history? However, NY is not alone. Similar stats show up in other states and as a nation. Why would politicians and medical administrators want to artificially inflate the COVID numbers? On the political side, to keep the panic stoked so that they could push through their non-COVID political agenda while people were totally focused on this manufactured crisis. For medical facilities it was a survival strategy. Since the government put hospitals and clinics on lockdown except for COVID patients, hospitals and clinics were starving for cash. For each COVID patient, the government promised to reimburse the medical facility $13,000. For each patient they put on a respirator, they would get $39,000. However, now there have been reports, in which many patients have died, not from COVID directly, but from faulty or prolonged use of respirators.

I do not fault the medical institutions entirely. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN reported a few weeks ago that they expect to lose $3 billion this year. Many rural hospitals, already struggling financially, may have to close before this all settles out. And why? Because elite bureaucrats thought it was a good idea to hamstring every medical institution in the country and forbid them to carry on business as usual? Why not let each individual facility develop their own game plan that would enable them to survive and still serve their communities? Too much common sense or a plot of socialized medicine?

The Restaurant Debacle. Thousands of small businesses are falling prey to two months of closures. Thousands of restaurants, some in business for generations will never re-open. Many that do re-open may not make it to the end of the year under the draconian re-opening guidelines, unless they are very well capitalized. Restaurants (not the fast food guys) have already missed out on three big weekends (Easter, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day) in most states, plus millions of birthdays, weddings, graduations and other celebrations. With punitive re-opening guidelines by almighty governors that will make it nearly impossible to make a profit, it is hard to see many restaurants surviving. In Minnesota, for example, the governor’s new edict on May 20 will benevolently allow restaurants and bars to re-open on June 1, but only at 50% capacity (but no more than 50 people total) and only for outdoor patio “dine-in” or take-out customers. No more than 4 people per table (6 if family) and tables must be 6 feet apart. Apparently, it does not matter if your restaurant was designed to hold 25, 50, 100 or 500 diners, you are still limited to 50% and a maximum of 50 customers.

Both staff and customers must wear masks. In Minnesota, where there is maybe five months of clement weather, how many restaurants and bars have outdoor patios sufficient to replace only 50% of their clientele? Not too many would be my guess. In addition, not too many restaurants or bars can prosper at 50% capacity, especially during anticipated busy weekends. So sorry, but you may be saying goodbye to your favorite restaurant or restaurants forever.

Church. Now, here’s the real sore spot for me. With 501 c3 designation controlling the freedom of expression of most churches in America, the church, by-and-large has been indebted to the government, both state and federal. Many leftist democratic states are preventing churches from opening up as long as they can, and when they are “allowed” they face very restrictive “guidelines” that hamper their ministries. Minnesota, where churches have been forcibly vacated for about two months, is a good illustration. On May 20, Governor Walz (D-MN) offered up his umpteenth edict. While Big Box stores like Wal Mart and others have been allowed to stay open, where hundreds and thousands of people are in and out all day and night, churches have been shuttered. The overwhelming majority of churches across the country have readily complied, many even citing Romans 13 as their required act of obedience. But now, the patience is wearing thin and parishioners or congregants are putting pressure on their church leaders to get off the fence and do what Jesus would do for His people and His church.

Back to Governor Walz of Minnesota. Walz declared that churches, along with salons, gyms, tattoo parlors (yes, churches are linked to tattoo parlors, don’tcha know), fitness centers, theaters, etc. will have to wait until sometime this summer to possibly, maybe, receive their decree from the almighty powers to be, to re-open.

However, what will church look like in the post-virus craze? Right now, groups over 10 are verboten. Maybe 50 will be permitted. Some things are likely to be required. Maintain social distancing of six feet, wear your mask, and avoid all personal contact and no more than 25-50% capacity. Think about it, if you are a pastor or church member. How will this affect your church culture and cohesiveness? No more welcoming handshakes. No more nestling together with friends in the same pew or seating arrangement. No more extending the hand of fellowship as is common in many churches during the service. No more laying on of hands or group corporate prayer. What about your church choir or worship team? Will they have to be scaled down and forced to distance themselves from one another? Or will singing be allowed at all? What about communion? In most churches the communion elements are personally handled, even by others before you receive them. And, what about that bastion of church unity, the potluck or pot blessing? Is that now going to be scuttled into the dust bin of time? How can churches survive without their potluck dinners? What about bingo? Say it ain’t so, Aunt Sally! Will money now be designated by the state as “filthy lucre” and therefore be forbidden in the collection plate? Will churches succumb to being state run?

If churches and their leaders, both singularly and corporately, do not take a firm, whatever the consequences stance now, church as it was designed to be by Christ and as it should be, will disappear. We Christians will have no one to blame but our feeble selves.

Mask or not to Mask. If you feel more comfortable and safe wearing a mask, you go right ahead. But please, do not wear one when you are driving a vehicle or operating machinery of any kind. You could cause an accident, injure yourself or even die—yes, die. Look it up! Hundreds of medical professionals and researchers are finally coming forth with the truth. MASKS DO NOT WORK! They will not prevent you from getting COVID-19 or many other viruses. Members of Congress do not fully believe so. Many seem only to wear masks when they are in front of a camera, and then usually wear them incorrectly. They apparently are useless for felons since thousands of them are being sprung on U.S. citizens so they do not get the virus. Wake up folks. This is all a game and the American citizen is being shut out by a score of scads to nothing (zippo, nada, zero).

“Social Distancing,” the New 21st Century Self-Imprisonment. One way to destroy a society is to require that individuals distance, that is, disengage themselves from other people. It is not only demoralizing, but for some it can be extremely depressing and life threatening. Think about it. How many of our beloved seniors and younger, that have died (whether from COVID or something else) have died without family members at their side in the last 2-3 months? When has this ever happened in America? When has this ever been tolerated in America? NEVER! Will you allow it to happen again? Will you allow your mother, father, spouse, child to die alone? What about you? Would you want to die alone? The “powers to be” are shattering American society and far too many people are cheering them on. Socialization, whether at church, work, business, restaurants with family, friends or co-workers is the social fabric of America. It always has been, but will it always be? Only you can prevent it from disappearing from your life.

Destroying the Food Chain. Briefly. Destroy a nation’s food chain and resources and you can have the people on their knees begging for crumbs. It is outrageous, and sinful, that farmers all across the country have been forced to euthanize millions of hogs, chickens, cattle and other livestock because their processors were forced to shut down. In addition, farmers in southern states and out West were forced to plow under crops ready for harvest; dairymen had to dump millions of gallons of milk because they had no outlets. For the very first time in my eight decades on this good earth, I found meat departments empty or nearly so. Eggs not available. Chicken, an almost every day staple for many, scarce. In America? Can’t happen, you say. But wait, the worst is yet to come, say the “experts.” And they are likely correct.

Beholden to the Government. Most Americans, so distant from the reality of the United States Constitution, appear to applaud the government as their savior and prostrate themselves over every little crumb the Burgermeisters deem them worthy of receiving. This “crisis” is just one more giant step, not for mankind, but toward governmental serfdom and total dependence on a small select group of uncivil servants of the public. Just look at how simple and fast they got the American citizen, who is “guaranteed” unrestricted freedom and liberty, to completely shut down their daily lives and voluntarily accept near abject poverty, all for the “common good.” Within a scant two months, over 35 million formerly gainfully employed Americans were told to go home and stay there until “Big Brother” said it was okay for them to stick their heads out in public.

It was so easy, so quick and Americans were so compliant. Just imagine what we will be asked to give up next time and for how long. The stage is already being set for a “do over” in the fall or winter, just in case the unemployment starts to rebound.

Well, this is getting pretty long and there could be no end in sight if I continue. But think of everyday things you and I take for granted and how state and federal government are forcing changes you and I are not likely to embrace, in addition to those already addressed. What about our educational system? How will it be affected? Some primary schools are already discussing the continuance of “distance learning.” Some colleges and universities are talking about the possibility of not re-opening their campuses until 2022. And, my pet peeve: Many stores and shops used to have chairs or benches inside or outside for the weary traveler to rest an aching back or tired feet. Now, they have disappeared or made inaccessible. Are you kidding me! If you do not want to sit by me because you think I might give you the “plague,” fine, don’t. I enjoy solitude too. But why deny me a place to rest my weary body? This is just one of countless absurdities that is ruffling my feathers. But I’m sure you would have your list too if you would just take a minute to reflect. And don’t get me going on sport activities at all levels. Has that been destroyed too?

The “New Normal.” Almost from day one of the pandemic we have been assaulted with rhetoric, largely from politicians on the left, that there will be no going back to a normal life in America, but we will enter into a “new normal,” whatever that is. Are you comfortable with this new politically-defined life for you and your offspring? I, for one, am very disturbed and greatly irritated by this. You should be too. In case you have not noticed, your constitutional rights are being systematically stripped away one by one and far too many clueless Americans seem so very happy to have it happen as long as they perceive that they are safer now.

Who stands to benefit from this disaster? One group, I assure you, that will not benefit, and that is the American people. The democratic socialist Marxists, however, are squealing with glee. They have never had a greater opportunity to so easily pursue and implement their anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-constitution agenda. This is THEE “never let a good crisis go to waste” crisis that they could not have fully imagined, yet have fully taken advantage. All that “stimulus” money to help the “po folk” was an illusion to permit them to load up with financial pork for their favorite cronies, abortion clinics and their ilk. All the while gleefully putting the American taxpayer on the hook for trillions more in unaffordable U.S. debt. How nice of them. A key objective, despite the immense pain for American households, was one last ditch effort to destroy the “Trump Economy.” Russia-gate did not do it. Ukraine-gate was a failure. Impeachment was a disaster. What’s left that could so utterly and rapidly destroy President Trump’s hallmark and re-election hopes? Need I explain further?

And, I have not even touched on the likely horrendous financial impact on Americans and America. However, if you have the fortitude, you could read the article linked below.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Culture of Death

March 7, 2018

Every time there is a mass shooting or some horrific event in the United States involving guns, some (usually Democratic or leftist) politician or leftist talking head on television will boldly proclaim that America has become a “culture of death”.

I agree, but not for the same brash pontificating reasons they promulgate.   America, indeed, has become a culture of death, but it started long before the first mass shooting at a school.  Conspicuously absent from the culture of death dialogue on the left is the fact that God, the Bible and prayer have been stripped from our nation’s schools and the killing of the innocent has become the law of the land.

I would put forth that it started the day in 1963 when prayer was outlawed in U.S. schools.  (I remember clearly that when I was in first grade in public school in the late 1940s that we started each day with a reading from Psalms or Proverbs, a recitation of the Lord’s Prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.)  Prayer and then Bible reading were ripped from the children of America via three Supreme Court decisions in 1962 (Engel vs. Vitale) and in 1963 (Murray vs. Curlett and Abington Township School District vs. Schempp).  In all three cases, the High Court, led by liberal Chief Justice, Earl Warren, erroneously and boldly misinterpreted the First Amendment and cited the non-existing doctrine of separation of church and state that does not exist anywhere in the U.S. Constitution.  Essentially, the Supreme Court of the land was telling the nation’s children that Almighty God had no place in their life – no grounding of absolute truth; and no moral compass by which to judge one’s life.*

Then came the horrific Supreme Court ruling on  January 22, 1973 in Rowe vs. Wade that gave women in America the right to kill their unborn children.  Since that ungodly decision, American women/mothers have killed or allowed to be killed over 60 million of their babies – 60 MILLION!  So, what lesson did (and does) this teach America’s youth? That life is not worth much.  If your own mother can chose to end your life, then what is life worth?  NOTHING!  “So, why should I care about someone else’s life or my own?”

Abortion is a form of child sacrifice that God calls evil (see Leviticus 18:21, 20:1-5 and 1 Kings 11:5-8).   The debate from the left on what constitutes a human life in the mother’s womb is a non-issue as far as I am concerned and as far as God is concerned.  In the Bible, God declares that, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you . . .” (Isaiah 49:1, 5).  The left can argue all it wants about when a life is a life, but it is God who has stated that a life begins when He has conceived of it.

On top of these sweeping events affecting our nation’s children who become aggressive adults is the onslaught of violent video games and gratuitous Hollywood murder and mayhem filth that permeates our collective senses, but especially that of our youth.  Video games are no longer gratifying unless a 9 year old can blast away the humanoid of his choice or annihilate by a multitude of gruesome methods any foe he desires.  And we have the audacity to wonder why a growing number of our children are killing children or anyone else who invades their space.

One Virginia House of Delegates representative got it right in a speech before his peers on March 2, 2018.  You can watch and listen to it here.  Republican Nick Freitas (Culpepper, R-30) stated unequivocally that gun control is not the issue, the issue is the breakdown of our society.

PLEASE NOTE, the “culture of death” is not an issue of gun control or Second Amendment rights, but a mindset change on what is truly important to us as a people.  Do we want God in our lives or not?  Is murder, murder, whether of the unborn or those walking upright?  What respect for life do we truly honor and not give lip service to on a daily basis?

The great pastor and preacher, Dr. Peter Marshall, at the height of World War II gave a riveting sermon on March 11, 1944 called Trial by Fire.**  It was based on 1 Kings 18:21.  Some excerpts from that famous speech which I had the privilege of transcribing from a cassette tape his son gave me.

Materialism had a god, Dr. Marshall thundered.  His name was Baal. He offered to his devotees things that human instincts craved.  He was a god of the flesh.  His priests encouraged the people to follow their natural inclinations.  It was worship and indulgence expressed in lust and adorned in selfishness.  It had no inhibitions at all. . . .

So, morality became a relative thing.  The old absolutes were regarded as far too intolerant.  The national moral standards were lowered. . . .

It was a time now for men to take sides.  There was no middle ground.  They could not be neutral.  They had to be on one side or the other.  They had to decide whether their nation would be governed by God or ruled by tyrants. . . .

The choices you make in moral and religious questions determine the way America will go.  We badly need a prophet who will have the ear of America and who will say, “If the Lord be God, follow Him!  But if Baal, then follow him!”

President George Washington also had it right.  Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.  In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.  The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and cherish them (Farewell Speech, September 17, 1796).

What if . . .?

January 11, 2018

The main argument for unfettered immigration in the United States is that America has an ever shrinking workforce due to a non-replacement birth rate of 2.1 births per child bearing age women in the U.S.  There is no question that America’s birth rate is currently below replacement rate.  With more and more Americans opting to forego marriage and family or women choosing to have fewer children later in life, America’s fertility rate has been more or less on a steady decline.  So, the obvious solution is to bring in more and more immigrants, no matter where they are from or what their skill level or potential contribution to society and America’s well established culture and values.

There is, however, a simple (albeit, hind sighted) solution without having to unnecessarily import hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have no allegiance to America, its future and values.

Since the passage of Roe vs. Wade in January, 1973 (now, stay with me), there have been somewhere between 58 million and 60 million young American lives snuffed out in the womb or right after birth . . . deliberately.

What if these human beings were allowed to live, grow, eat, have health care, become educated, get jobs, raise families, etc.?  What might have been their financial contribution to America’s economy, much less to its inventions, education, scientific and cultural advancements and much more?

As a case in point, it has been estimated by various sources that it takes $250,000 to $300,000 to raise one child from birth through age 18.  (What follows is simple math, not intended to be 100% correct, but rather to make a thought-provoking point.)  In the past 45 years of U.S. abortions, the nation’s butchers have averaged 1.333 million inhuman endings to innocent life per year.  If those children had been allowed to exist, those raising them through age 18 purportedly would have added nearly $400 billion to the U.S. economy each year.

But wait!  What might these abortion survivors be contributing to the U.S. workforce and economy after reaching age 18?  The first year of Roe vs. Wade survivors reaching age 18 would have been 1991.  Inflation calculations and other variables aside, let’s say each survivor, on average, once reaching age 18 and beyond (to age 45 in 2017) contributed $30,000/year to the U.S. economy through work, education, purchases, investments, societal contributions, etc.  That total would come to about $40 billion PER YEAR (less in younger years, more in older years).  Each year post 1991 there would have been a “new crop” of 1.333 million 18 year olds hitting the U.S. economy, so that by the beginning of 2018, the combined impact of these 18+ year old survivors might have been $1.8 trillion toward America’s 2018 GDP.

I know this is gross over simplification, but you get the point: each person taken out from full participation in society, whether through abortion or some other premature death, not only has an emotional (and in the case of abortion, a moral) impact on family and society, but on the financial impact as well.

But what about the economic contributions of new immigrants?  Figures are equally hard to secure, but the latest figures I could find were that a 2011 federal report claimed that immigrants contributed an estimated $743 billion to the U.S. economy.  However, a 2012 report cited in the National Review and elsewhere, stated that “illegal” immigrants were costing U.S. taxpayers $113 billion a year in taxpayer funded benefits while at the same time paying little or no income taxes.  So, the net contribution of immigrants to the U.S. economy might be estimated at $630 billion, or one-third that of the accumulated contribution of non-aborted children.

Despite the fact that the foregoing statistics could be endlessly picked apart, I find the thought intriguing, if not morally astute, don’t you?  Let me know your thoughts.

Oh, and where would America and the Christian church be today as world leaders had they not submitted to a culture of murdering of the innocents?  Just saying.

To the Right or to the Left?

January 31, 2017

Have you ever wondered what makes people on the left (the “liberals” or “progressives”) do or think what they do and why those on the right (the “conservatives”) do or think the way they do?

Are you to the left or to the right, politically speaking? When did “left” and “right” start being used to describe political parties or political ideologies?

The predominate thinking of left and right divisions points to the French Revolution of 1789-1799. When the seating of the National Assembly took place those who were loyal to religion (i.e., Christianity) and the king were seated to the right of the president and those who supported the revolution sat on the left.  When the National Assembly was replaced with a Legislative Assembly in 1791, the “innovators” (revolutionaries) sat on the left, the “moderates” sat in the center and the “conscientious defenders of the constitution” sat on the right.

Burke vs. Paine. The political divisions of left and right became solidified in the ongoing political pamphlet war between Edmund Burke of Britain and Thomas Paine of America during the 1790s. Burke was a conservative while Paine was considered to be more liberal.  In 1790 Burke published Reflections on the Revolution in France.  Burke was known as a great reformer and many assumed that he would embrace the French Revolution as did intellectuals, radicals and orthodox Britains.  However, in Reflections Burke revealed his disdain for the Revolution, which he proclaimed would descend into anarchy, terror and war, which it did.

Burke’s position outraged Paine, who responded with his lengthy pamphlet of 31 articles, The Rights of Man, in 1791.  The pamphlet “war” became a literary battle between Burke, the consummate intellectual with a mastery of facts and a deep understanding of the limitations of man versus Paine, known for his hatred of authority in any form, rejecting conventional wisdom and tradition in exchange for re-establishing society and government based on abstract reasoning.  While Burke was typically admired by his contemporaries for his integrity and dignity, Paine garnered little admiration, even from his followers.  Burke was considered to be the consummate conservative on the “right”, while Paine was looked upon as the ordered radical on the “left”.

The reaction of the left vs. that of the right. Have you noticed that when people on the “left” get upset when things do not go their way they seem motivated to ridicule, demean and dehumanize their opposition? When they really get upset, they vehemently protest, riot, oppose authority, destroy other people’s property and businesses and even injure the innocent or those that serve to protect.  In the extreme, they seem to go ballistic; become irrational and are driven by unreasonable and idiotic demands.

People on the “right” on the other hand, when they are upset because things do not go as they hoped for or planned, typically do not demean the opposition, riot, destroy property or threaten the well being of others. They tend not to break the law, but, rather, respect the law to do what is right and constitutional.  Their typical form of protest is through the written or spoken word, or by voicing their disappointment or disapproval via the ballot box.  They take legal channels to work for change.  This may take longer, but their methods do not disrupt or threaten the stability or well being of individuals or society.

Well, I think I have discovered the reason for this great divergence of behavior between the left and the right political and societal factions. In the Bible the wise sage, King Solomon, mused long ago that, “A wise man’s heart is at his right hand, but a fool’s heart at his left” (Ecclesiastes 10:2, NKJV).  In the NIV translation of the Bible, the same verse reads thus: “The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.”  The Amplified version of the Bible states the verse this way:  “A wise man’s heart turns him toward the right [which is the way of blessing], but a fool’s heart turns him toward the left [which is the way of condemnation].”

Well, there you have it. The Bible says that those who are on the left are fools, deserving condemnation, while those on the right are wise, deserving of blessing.  Oh, I know some will say I am cherry-picking one verse in the Bible to make a point.  But, wait there is more.

Sheep vs. Goats. In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25, Jesus makes it clear what God’s Judgment will be like. Starting in verse 31, Jesus stated, “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.  All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.  And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left” (vss. 31-33).    Prior to this chapter, Jesus used the term “sheep” to refer to those He sought to follow Him or those who were following Him.  In other words, the sheep are those who would be obedient to His calling.

Jesus’ narrative continues: “Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:  for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me’” (vss. 34-36).  Jesus points out that it is those on the right that were obedient to God’s will and purpose even though they may not have known it.

“Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink?  When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?  Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’  And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me’” (vss. 37-40).

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

“Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (vss. 41-46).

Now you know why people on the “left” have lost their collective minds over the commanding political victories of Republicans on the “right”. The left, which has now become progressively aligned with communist, Marxist views and refuses to oppose radical Islam, no longer represents anything that resembles our Founder’s America.  The left has become unhinged, violent and literally insane in their approach to disappointment, defeat or objection to political policy.  Those on the “right” still have a strong desire to follow the U.S. Constitution so wisely laid down by America’s Founding Fathers; following legal procedures enshrined for our Republic almost two-and-a-half centuries ago.

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.  Proverbs 29:2

Addendum. The preceding scripture in Matthew, as my wife so observantly pointed out after my posting, would seem to support the left’s outrage and their compassion for the “stranger” or refugee.  But are the majority on the left really concerned about the plight of the refugee?  Granted there are some on the left who have genuine compassion for those in need, but they tend to express their concerns in rational, dignified ways.  However, it would seem that the vociferous majority on the left (Democrats, progressives, liberal college students, the liberal media, Hollywood types, etc.) have gone ballistic over President Trump’s “temporary” four month ban on immigrants from hostile Mid-Eastern countries.  Is their outrage motivated by their compassion for the “refugee” (whom they clearly identify as “Muslim”) or are they motivated by their vitriol hatred of President Trump?  I believe it is clearly the latter.

Case in point #1: In 2011, President Obama instituted a similar ban on Iraqi refugees for six months and no one on the left, including our now clearly leftist media, said a peep.  No protests, no outrage; nothing.  Why is it so unreasonable to those on the left for the President of the United States to implement a temporary ban on refugees from countries that are well known hot spots of Islamic terrorists trying to get to the United States to do us harm?  Is not the first duty of the President to defend and protect the safety and well-being of the citizens of America, or are we too conditioned to eight years of a former president who could have cared less about such constitutional responsibilities?

Remember, under Obama, not only did he grant immigration waivers to senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood (known for Islamic terrorism), but he made other MB members part of his administration, including in the Department of Homeland Security.

No, those who are truly leftists are not concerned about the plight of the refugee. They are only concerned about opposing and destroying the Trump presidency.  They will be satisfied with nothing less.

Case in point #2: This past weekend in Seattle an unidentified Black Lives Matter speaker who identified herself as a “preschool teacher” (God forbid) went on a hate-filled, vulgar tirade, screaming: We need to start killing people. First off, we need to start killing the White House. The White House must die. The White House, your f—ing White House, your f—ing presidents, they must go! F— the White House.  F— white supremacy, f— the U.S. empire, f— your imperialist ass lives. That s— gotta go.

Now, if that were a white person advocating such hate and incitement to do violence during the Obama Whitehouse, she would have been immediately arrested and charged with (at the very least) with a hate crime and, perhaps, with a terroristic threat. However, under the “whiteness” of the Trump administration, the leftist media and Seattle law enforcement did not even give it a nod, but rather a wink of approval.

Case in point #3: On January 29, Jonathan Turley, a well known constitutional law professor at George Washington University School of Law (and a self-professed political liberal) was invited to appear on CNN to explain the constitutionality of President Trump’s Executive Order on the temporary immigration ban.  Turley barely got to say a few words when CNN’s “Foreign Political Analyst” (no joke intended), Rula Jebreal, jumped down his throat, screaming at him that the “ban” was racist, white supremacy and “an instrument of tyranny.”  Apparently Ms. Jebreal had her eyes and ears closed throughout Obama’s tyrannical presidency.  The irrational, leftist Jebreal was so out of control that all Professor Turley could do was shake his head in disbelief at her tirade.  CNN host, Fareed Zakaria, of course, did nothing to try to bring her back to earth.

There are other examples far too numerous to bother with in this blog. Suffice it to say that the majority on the left have no interest or intention of meeting the needs of refugees, but, rather are only interested in causing chaos in order to bring down the Trump presidency.  I would bet the “farm” that if the ban were for “Christian” refugees you would not hear a peep from anyone on the left.

To the contrary, those on the “right” (largely represented by Christians) have two thousand years of generous, sacrificial history of reaching out to the oppressed, the poor, the stranger, the refugee.

And, a brief review and reminder: Where was the collective outrage from the left and the Obama administration when tens of thousands of Christians were (and are) being slaughtered, tortured, beheaded, thrown from buildings, etc. by Muslim terrorists?  Not a peep; not a tear; not a word of objection.
