What if . . .?

January 11, 2018

The main argument for unfettered immigration in the United States is that America has an ever shrinking workforce due to a non-replacement birth rate of 2.1 births per child bearing age women in the U.S.  There is no question that America’s birth rate is currently below replacement rate.  With more and more Americans opting to forego marriage and family or women choosing to have fewer children later in life, America’s fertility rate has been more or less on a steady decline.  So, the obvious solution is to bring in more and more immigrants, no matter where they are from or what their skill level or potential contribution to society and America’s well established culture and values.

There is, however, a simple (albeit, hind sighted) solution without having to unnecessarily import hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have no allegiance to America, its future and values.

Since the passage of Roe vs. Wade in January, 1973 (now, stay with me), there have been somewhere between 58 million and 60 million young American lives snuffed out in the womb or right after birth . . . deliberately.

What if these human beings were allowed to live, grow, eat, have health care, become educated, get jobs, raise families, etc.?  What might have been their financial contribution to America’s economy, much less to its inventions, education, scientific and cultural advancements and much more?

As a case in point, it has been estimated by various sources that it takes $250,000 to $300,000 to raise one child from birth through age 18.  (What follows is simple math, not intended to be 100% correct, but rather to make a thought-provoking point.)  In the past 45 years of U.S. abortions, the nation’s butchers have averaged 1.333 million inhuman endings to innocent life per year.  If those children had been allowed to exist, those raising them through age 18 purportedly would have added nearly $400 billion to the U.S. economy each year.

But wait!  What might these abortion survivors be contributing to the U.S. workforce and economy after reaching age 18?  The first year of Roe vs. Wade survivors reaching age 18 would have been 1991.  Inflation calculations and other variables aside, let’s say each survivor, on average, once reaching age 18 and beyond (to age 45 in 2017) contributed $30,000/year to the U.S. economy through work, education, purchases, investments, societal contributions, etc.  That total would come to about $40 billion PER YEAR (less in younger years, more in older years).  Each year post 1991 there would have been a “new crop” of 1.333 million 18 year olds hitting the U.S. economy, so that by the beginning of 2018, the combined impact of these 18+ year old survivors might have been $1.8 trillion toward America’s 2018 GDP.

I know this is gross over simplification, but you get the point: each person taken out from full participation in society, whether through abortion or some other premature death, not only has an emotional (and in the case of abortion, a moral) impact on family and society, but on the financial impact as well.

But what about the economic contributions of new immigrants?  Figures are equally hard to secure, but the latest figures I could find were that a 2011 federal report claimed that immigrants contributed an estimated $743 billion to the U.S. economy.  However, a 2012 report cited in the National Review and elsewhere, stated that “illegal” immigrants were costing U.S. taxpayers $113 billion a year in taxpayer funded benefits while at the same time paying little or no income taxes.  So, the net contribution of immigrants to the U.S. economy might be estimated at $630 billion, or one-third that of the accumulated contribution of non-aborted children.

Despite the fact that the foregoing statistics could be endlessly picked apart, I find the thought intriguing, if not morally astute, don’t you?  Let me know your thoughts.

Oh, and where would America and the Christian church be today as world leaders had they not submitted to a culture of murdering of the innocents?  Just saying.
