. . . and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird!”
As America’s wealth and power grew, so did its worldwide influence. However, what it gained in influence it relinquished to pride, moral collapse and perversion. The once great nation that was founded on Christ-centered ideals and life style slipped ever so slowly at first (like the proverbial frog in a slowly heated pot), then swiftly into hedonism and godlessness.
Not long after the end of World War II church attendance peaked at around 60-62 percent and hovered around there until the end of the 20th century. From there those that attended church regularly plummeted to low estimates in 2004 of under 20 percent. While Gallup and other pollsters claim that about 40 percent of Americans attend church, other researchers say that if you look at the attendance of the same people, perhaps less than 18 percent attend church regularly. A poll listed by NationMaster.com (date unknown) lists 44 percent of Americans claim to attend church weekly.
“All nations would say, ‘Why has the Lord done so to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?’”
The prophet Jeremiah, before the collapse and captivity of Judah, continued to speak God’s words of warning and Judah’s pending judgment. “‘Run up and down every street in Jerusalem,’ says the Lord. ‘Look high and low; search throughout the city! If you can find even one just and honest person, I will not destroy the city. But even when they are under oath, saying, As surely as the Lord lives, they are still telling lies!’” (Jeremiah 2:1-2, NLT). There was a time, how long ago is debatable, when to serve one’s country in Washington was a great honor and required a person of great integrity and honesty. Today, such a servant-leader is hard to find much less recognize. Lying under oath, even at the highest positions of leadership, are no longer given a second thought. For decades, the American people have been widely deceived and lied to on everything from the country’s military involvement abroad, the economy and national debt, government clandestine activities at home and overseas and a host of other potentially devastating issues.
Liberty will not long survive the total extinction of morals.
Samuel Adams (1722–1803), Father of the American Revolution
God spoke through Jeremiah and told the people of Israel and Judah that their leaders “have dealt very treacherously with Me” (Jeremiah 5:11). The Jewish leaders were repeatedly deceiving the people about God and His role in their lives. “They have lied about the Lord, and said, ‘It is not He. Neither will evil come upon us, nor shall we see sword or famine. And the prophets become wind, for the word is not in them. Thus shall it be done to them’” (Jeremiah 5:12-13).
For decades, America’s leaders, including some in the church, have lied about the importance of God in the affairs and lives of Americans. Rather than teach, guide and be an example of God’s grace and righteousness among us, they led the citizenry down an errant path away from God, deceiving them with words of comfort and false expectations; repeating not only the sinful behavior of the past but capitalizing on it and enhancing it. Furthermore, they told the public not to listen to the “naysayers”, those who spoke God’s words of truth and tried to guide the people back onto the right path.
Because of the Jews refusal to listen to His prophets, God told them that . . . “I will bring a nation against you from afar, O house of Israel . . . It is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know, nor can you understand what they say” (Jeremiah 5:15). What America’s fate will be, only God knows for sure. However, for those who
are paying attention to world affairs, one cannot deny that there are at least two powerful forces or nations lining up to overtake America: China and the “nation” of Islam (see Islam & Christianity: A Revealing Contrast by the author).
“’Nevertheless in those days,’ says the Lord, ‘I will not make a complete end of you. And it will be when you say, ‘Why does the Lord our God do all these things to us?’ then you shall answer them, ‘Just as you have forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so you shall serve aliens in a land that is not yours’” (Jeremiah 5:18-19; author’s emphasis). The words of God through Jeremiah, of course, came true for the Jews of Judah, as they were overrun and taken captive by the Babylonians. As America’s debt and indebtedness to others (including its enemies) mushrooms and its economy and military are decimated, will it fall victim to those who desire its demise?
Religion and good morals are the only solid foundation of public liberty and happiness.
Letter to John Trumbull, Letter of Delegates to Congress, 1774-1789, Volume 11, October 1778.
One of the biggest problems for the Jews of Jeremiah’s time and during the age of the prophets was that they turned a deaf ear to God and what He was telling them through His prophets. “To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Indeed their ear is uncircumcised [not purified], and they cannot give heed. Behold, the word of the Lord is a reproach to them; they have no delight in it” (Jeremiah 6:10; author’s emphasis). While there are still millions of God-fearing people in America, the majority of Americans and their leaders have turned from God and what He expects of them. Not only have they turned their backs on Him but they disdain and reject everything about Him and His commandments. “Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?” God asked rhetorically of the Jews. “No! They were not at all ashamed; nor did they know how to blush” (Jeremiah 6:15a). Like the Jews, the majority of Americans no longer blush at sin. Man is no longer sinful; he is just seeking self-fulfillment and pleasure on all levels.
The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the new Christians in Rome, told them God is against all sinfulness and that mankind has no excuse for not knowing God because the truth of His existence was all around them in His creation. “They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them [or, “God is known to them instinctively”]. For ever since the world was created,” Paul declared, “people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God” (Romans 1:19-20, NLT).
If people cannot believe in God when His majesty is on display all around them every day, then Paul stated that their hearts were darkened (Romans 1:21) and that, “Professing to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:22; author’s emphasis).
Perhaps the biggest reason for America’s downfall is that its leaders became prideful and arrogant, believing themselves to be wise, but were in reality nothing but fools who did not consult God on anything. The words spoken by the prophet Jeremiah to the Jews long ago bear much truth for the leaders, past and present of the United States today.
Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward. . . . Yet they did not obey Me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck. They did worse than their fathers. . . . “So you shall say to them, ‘This is a nation that does not obey the voice of the Lord their God nor receive correction. Truth has perished and has been cut off from their mouth. (Jeremiah 7:24, 26, 28; author’s emphasis).
